In the first new policy announcement of the campaign, the prime minister has unveiled a plan that would see 18-year-olds given the choice of a full-time military placement for 12 months or a scheme to volunteer for one weekend a month for a year. The placement would be selective - with tests used to decide who is eligible - and involve working with the armed forces or in cyber defence. Sunak will not bring back 'national service' in any meaningful sense, or national service as we know it. It would be impossible in todays woke environment. National service was for a minimum of 18 months in the armed forces. Not 'up to' 25 days over a year on some mamby pamby course in which the instructors will inevitably see their fat pampered and bored charges as a pain in the arse. This is nothing more than a publicity stunt.

It looks like we are facing defeat, so lets try a nonsensical, populist idea which will please the "Gammons"
In reality, such a policy worked in the 1940s and 1950s, but times have changed, you cannot force people to do things that they do not want to do.

Maybe he knows that Europe will be sliding into war in the next few years and conscription will be introduced in degrees over that time .

yes, community service might be a good policy - but where is the money coming from?. Forced military service is nonsense - especially as the forces have more applicants than they have vacancies.

If you believe any of that old cobblers you need a check-up from the neck up, exactly where is he going to put them and train them, feed them and pay them. Not going to happen. The only threat they can think up is the Russians marching across Europe which is fading fast. Plus, the chance of anarchy would loom large indeed. It's a fact that the kids today don't see it like our politicos do. Somehow returning to the 50's isn't an actual option.

Rubbish, how will it be managed, Capita take over a year to process a regular volunteer for the Forces, how does he intend to administer the induction of people who will simply not turn up where they are told to, what will he do about those who refuse to participate.

Tell people it's going to be backdated, so everyone over 18 has to do it including MPs and see how keen they are on it then.

Would an 18yrs old Rooney be doing this?
