Desperate electric car owners turn to thermal cloak to help boost battery range Electric car owners could soon be turning to thermal cloaks in order to help boost their battery range. The new cloak, developed by researchers from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China, is designed to keep electric cars cool in the summer and warm in the winter. The hope is that the new cloak, which doesn't require any outside power source, will mark the end of range anxiety for drivers. Senior author of the study, Dr Kehang Cui, said the cloak was the car equivalent of a set of clothes.

Spray them with builders foam for insulation. They would look great.

Some of the depreciation on EV's is astronomical - actual running costs might be cheap (if you can stick to cheap charging) but the financial hit you take on the value of the, already massively overpriced, car is ridiculous.. Depreciation of over 50% in one year is criminal.. A general rule of thumb with car depreciation is the more of a luxury car it is the greater the rate of depreciation. In other words you have to pay through the nose if you want to be Flash Harry. I guess you knew that already.

I recently sold a Porsche, which I bought new 4 years ago, for very nearly what I paid - and that was selling it back to the garage I bought it from.

I don't even buy the story anyway, I was looking around a Merc dealership the other day and EV prices are still strong. The cut-off is years away, if EVs do not suit your circumstances then don't buy one lol.

Rip you to high heaven if you choose to actually own something.

You can do your own check - the guys number plate is on display and his figures look to be accurate. Go on the Webuyanycar website and check - I just did and he is not bullshitting, the car has depreciated by over 50%

This could be the clue. You guys earlier were talking in the ballpark of 50 grand for a new EV, but all the time you should understand EVs are much simpler mechanically than their ICE counterpart. A 50 grand EV is not in any way amazing. What is amazing to those on the manufacturing side is this.
I know you are bound to tell me this is shit and you probably reckon it would clap out, blow up or some hellish thing. Well no actually. In China it is very popular and used to do the school runs. The thing is most second cars are only ever used to run to local schools and shops. It will do 47km/h so for local roads it is all 30mph anyway. Being small and light it is cheap to run. That's not the amazing thing. The amazing thing is it is on sale on Alibaba for $1300. Do you remember the famous question posed to Gerard Ratner about how can you produce a full set of lead cut crystal glasses for 9.99? The answer was of course because they were crap. Times have changed though.
He should have left the panda on it though. That's a cool panda.

His car might have suffered bad depreciation, but that can happen on any car if you buy the wrong model / colour / spec.
I was watching a video on somebody speccing a new Lamborghini... the salesmen told him if you spec cheap the car will be virtually un-sellable.
The point being... an example of one car does not reflect a trend on the entire EV market.

It's just made by a normal firm over there. Chinese companies are reputed to be good places to work. You seem to think it is some kind of military dictatorship. Chinese folk don't give a shit where you drive your car. All they give a shit abut is that you are happy with your product.

With a Rolls Royce they let you choose any colour you want when they make it for you as a standard option, but should you choose a sickly pink colour then no one will want it. However the cars he speaks of are mid market typical cars.

Well the first thing to point out is that the stupid thing wouldn't be allowed on sale in Europe - it would fail every safety check.
The Chinese are notoriously lacking in any safety regulations so good luck to them.
