The heavier the vehicle the more road damage it causes, therefor the weight of a car should determine the level of road tax. As it does with lorries. That's a good point, so electric cars could pay more as their batteries weigh a lot. Unless there was a less than 2 ton bracket, they would keep them in that. £150 Then up to 3.5 ton, 7 ton, and anything over 7 tons pays £1000 per annum. Many electric cars weigh up to twice as much as the 'average' mid sized car, therefor they should pay twice the road tax.

So glad you have come around to the idea of punitive taxes for the more damaging vehicles on the road. Now about your gas guzzling, 2 tonne, V8... Indeed and I pay for it. Road tax for the Range Rover is £700, the road tax for the Fiesta is £30.

Yeah, and the piss take is that the road tax on my motorcycle is over £100 per year and yet it uses less fuel and causes less wear on the roads than your Fiesta while causing no congestion.

Well yes, that's a very fair point.

That's to compensate for the extra cost to the NHS. You'll just have to console yourself with the fact that your fellow motorcyclists are helping relieve the organ donor shortage.

Except that after 37 years my motorcycling has cost the NHS precisely zero.
But if I were in my car (along with every other motorcyclist) for every journey instead, you'd be gridlocked and going nowhere. And how much would that cost the economy?
Factor in that I've been a keyworker for the last 30 years (and still am) and a higher rate taxpayer (as a result of my private investments) meanwhile you're a retired, pot smoking, juggler and I think we know who's contributed most to society, don't we?
No, no need to thank me, you're welcome Monte.

No, no need to thank me, you're welcome Monte. You've clearly never eaten any of my chocolate cake. It's contribution to society will surely be recognised in the next new year's honours list.

No, I meant Vehicle Excise Duty. (Road Tax). All these cars wear out the roads and they need the potholes repairing. Fuel duty is a different matter. There are already taxes on electricity. The heavier the vehicle the more road damage it causes, therefor the weight of a car should determine the level of road tax. As it does with lorries. I pay nearly two grand a year in road tax for my vehicles already. I think we are being fleeced quite enough. Its madness. I can only drive one at a time so my impact isn't cumulative based on the number of vehicles I have. And what's all this bollox about its the vehicle being taxed not the person, yet when you buy or sell a car the tax isn't transferrable anymore. One of my cars costs me £675 a year for goodness sake. Vehicle tax is a massive con. The UK should have roads paved with gold with the amount the government must be scamming from people via road tax and fuel tax.

Road tax (VED) and fuel duty is worth £35 billion a year to the government cheeky bastards, at least Dick Turpin wore a mask. And even though EV's damage roads more than proper cars, they're exempt from both road tax and fuel duty.

They are CO2 neutral - the CO2 they produce from the vehicle is offset by the CO2 taken from the atmosphere in the production phase. The link is behind a paywall so I couldn't read the article. try this for the process

You should move to France, no road tax here. Have they scrapped paying a government charge on purchasing the vehicle? They must have, I've never paid one. Or are you referring to the one-off bonus/malus payment based on emissions?
