Happy St Georges day to all the heathen sassunnachs.
I just looked on twitter and this tweet by the labour party made me chuckle...
I thought the labour party hated the english flag and english nationalism? Lady nugee and he infamous quip about the english flag , white van essex man and UKIP and much else down the years.
Is this another pathetic attempt by starmer and mandelson to out naitonalist the tories in england? Will that man never learn?
Anyway happy st georges day .

It's never meant anything to me (and nor have any other national saint's days, but if St George's Day is what makes you happy, fill your boots.
In our town, as every year, the local Labour Party will be a part of the events (there's a parade, etc).

I think its great when countires celebrate their nationality and culture wether its on saints days or whatever. Labour , in my lifetime have consistently both in scotland and england frowned on any outward display of nationalism. Both the saltire and st georges cross where almost anathema to them in my experience.
This seems another of starmers poor attempts at jumping on the bandwagon to appear to be all things to all men . For celebrating st georges day to work though for labour , again , he needs to public in England to have selective amnesia of the labour party and many of its current politicians past display of hatred for all things english and linked to what they often think of as "a racist flag".
That the trouble for starmer. People dont forget.
This is the man who was trying for three years to disrespect the english voters wishes on the brexit referendum , so these puerile displays of wallowing in english nationalism will i think turn people off and backfire.
Labour should stick to what they apparently stand for , not try and out nationalst the tories. It looks as false as fuck.,

Happy murdered Christian day.
St George stood up to Nero and was murdered for it. Exactly the kind of courage that deserves remembrance. RIP Saint George.

St George stood up to Nero and was murdered for it. As with so many early saints, there's little or no historical evidence backing up ANY of his origin stories. (And even the most credulous accounts of his life place him a long time after Nero.)

I agree though , same in scotland and elsewhere , that these saints lifes are mostly fantasies concocted by religous fanatics in the medieval period.

Ah ok. About as relevant to England as St Andrew (an Israeli) was to Scotland. Neither of them visited Britain.
RIP anyway.

At least the Welsh can sleep soundly knowing that St David was an actual person who certainly existed (he was a bishop). I've even seen his shrine (although I believe the bones interred there are a bit iffy..).

If you ever come to scotland walter , you should do the tennents brewery tour . They even have a 3D hologram of st mungo the welshman .
Apparently he was brewing tennets super lager on the banks of the molendinar burn in the 6th century ad , sellin it to the romans , and to this day the italians are the brewerys biggest customer for super lager.

Theft of the ownership of patriotismFor too long the Conservative Party have wrongly believed that they are the only party of true patriotism, but the current Labour leader has decided to fight back, and is now frequently seen beside the flag of the United Kingdom. So where are the origins of Labour Party patriotism towards our country ? The answer is simple - it all started from the very beginning, the founder of the Labour Party of whom the present leader is so named after Keir Hardie was a dedicated patriot and Unionist, so much so that he actually kept a Union Flag in the living room of his home. HAPPY St GEORGES DAY to all posters

[/quote] I actually visit Scotland quite regularly. Glasgow is easily my favourite British city, and Edinburgh is my perfect spot for a "culture break". (A few months ago, at the suggestion of an historian friend, I visited the church in Govan to see the "Govan Stones" (which I confess I'd never heard of..). Truly impressive.) Not being a beer lover, I probably won't be signing up to a brewery tour, but I can guess there's an interesting story to be told of Scottish beer making.
