Proportionally the numbers are quite small. The far bigger issue is the number not earning enough while working an needing top up benefits. A prime cause of this is house prices/ rents/mortgages Thats certainly an issue that can be solved by raising the minimum wage and capping rents so people can afford to live Yep, because businesses have so much spare cash sloshing around. If the Labour party can get the economy moving again and people spending I will be very happy to see the minimum wage rise. BTW. When the minimum wage rises, so do all those above. In 2023 my business saw wages rise by 14% But when your mortgage payment goes up by £800 a month, no wage rise is going to help.

Interesting question.
If we force people back to work, or deal with the issues so they can work, or fix their bodies so they can work.
Are there the jobs for them to do?

But this isn't a simple problem that is solved by (say) not raising interest rates. If you hold interest rates artificially low, you end up with a borrowing overhang that can't really be justified by production, and devaluation - this will all end up going pop. You are also further antagonising the underlying problem by encouraging people to borrow money to buy real estate - which keeps the price of real estate high. It's the price of real estate that is at the bottom of the knot of wages / prices / standard of living

The welfare state paid for by UK tax payers for the benefit of everyone is all well and good, in theory. Unfortunately this isn't the 1950's, and in the 1950's when the welfare stare was designed to improve life in post war Brittain no one ever envisaged the rest of the world comming to the UK to take advantage of it. But that's where we are today. UK tax payers whether they like it or not, are funding an international welfare state. You can have a welfare state or you can have unfettered immigration.
But you can't have both.

Unfettered? That's a big leap.

You talk about forcing people back into work, but thanks to Rachel from accounts and the most incompetent budget in decades there wont be any work to force people back into. Employers have already said the budget has forced them to cut back or scrap planned investment, and thanks to Rayners new employment rights bill, employers have said they will recruit fewar employees. Well done Labour. This is the most incompetent government in my lifetime.

Everyone I know in business is desperate to here "the plan" and know how long we have to struggle on before help arrives. My company lost £1.4m in Covid and since the beginning of 2023 we have run at 60 to 70% sales. This thing is not a mild amusement for me.
