Can ANYONE please explain what it is that Farage wants... Well, when I was half the age I am today I led a team of 15 software developers. My employers CEO had recently sold the company out to a thieving piece of shit who happily sold weapons of mass destruction through a set of intermediaries using false paperwork to Saddam Hussein with the full.knowledge of the UK and US governments and was about to reap the whirlwind of bankruptcy as the requisite sacrificial goat.... Meanwhile, one of those 15 was a freelance contractor called Frank. Facing the second P45 of my career and looking for an escape chute I asked Frank what made him go freelance He told me the believed people wanted one or more of three things in life. Money, Power and Respect. Well he said, he had at one time or another had all three. On the subject of POWER, he had previously held a position like mine, with the power to hire and fire and make people's lives heaven or hell and for some people this was what was best in life but he was not one of them. And, mentioning two or three of the management of my current employer under whom we both suffered I had to admit neither was I. In fact although I did not know it, things done in my earlier career were soon to develop and make me one of a select band responsible for the ability to give life or death, the ultimate power trip. Having seen that power taken from me and abused by Politicians who were content to not spend money and thus leave the sick to die, I found out almost the hard way this power trip is not all it is made out to be. The second of the factors driving people was, Frank suggested, RESPECT. As a technical expert he was respected for the work he did and the way he did it. This again was a factor many found best in life, but while it gave Frank a warm feeling inside, it didn't pay the mortgage. And looking back now, I agree even more with that viewpoint now than I did then This then brings us to the third great motivator, said Frank. MONEY. As a freelancer, he said, he earned three times more than me and could do twice as much with it because tax arrangements then in place allowed him to use twice as much of the gross income as any employee. This gave him power to do as he liked subject only to accepting the stream of cash could end at any minute. He was the first of several in this line of work to tell me that everyone in any position of employment is in fact in one of two categories. There are those like him who know their choices make them permanently temporary within the firm's structure, giving it what it wants for a sackful of money, but knowing from day one the day will come that the money stops, and they are sent in their way, hopefully with a handshake and the good wishes that follow a job well done, which are rather vital to getting the next one, and those, most of whom either fail to understand, or choose to ignore, the fact they are only temporarily 'permanent' And so, said Frank, I decided of all three, I'll take the money every time. Would you like one of my agent's business cards ?? I took it A month later my employer showed their true colours by treating us all so shittily I picked up the phone, dialled the number and the rest as they say ... Turning back now to Farage. He has the MONEY to maintain a bank account at Coutts. He has the POWER to destroy those who tried to destroy him for his political view. How is the woman who tried to close his Coutts account as a power trip and an act of political spite doing these days He has the RESPECT of 17.2 million people to whom he provided the means to tell the Eurocrats to FUCK RIGHT OFF Seems to me he's hit the jackpot on all three And he's clearly wound you up which is the icing on the cake |

Reading up a bit, I'm not entirely sure that's true, or at least it's not the whole story The militarisation of the atoll took place over a number of years in the thick of the see-sawing between the Heath and Wilson governments, and I will accept that Wilson did not deviate from the course set. But unless I've seriously screwed my dates up the executive order making it illegal to occupy the islands and paving the way for deportation dates to heath's 1971 government according to the stuff I found on sites describing the measures taken Cheers .... The agreement to allow the US to take over control of Diego Garcia was signed in 1966 by Wilson - in exchange for a discount on nuclear missiles. The expulsions of the inhabitants started in 1968. Fair enough. That's not the way the government wants to play it, their website on the BIOT states categorically the government in the area chucked them off in response to legislation enacted in 1971. Looks like someone wants to revise history. Not surprising but not for the first time I mourn the passing of sites that monitor and archive RSS feeds ..... |

I mean, for what possible purpose to the advantage of the UK could owning an Atol, a group of remote islands in the Indian Ocean be to the UK. ? Why does Farage not grasp or understand that the deal as negotiated between Mauritius and the UK solves almost all of the outstanding issues - Mauritius regains sovereignty of its stolen territory - the islanders can now go home if they wish to - the United States retains its base - the UK is no longer in conflict with the UN, the International Court and the government of Mauritius. It doesn't matter whether holding onto an Atoll in the Indian Ocean could be of strategic importance to the UK, the fact is that since 1968 we held onto it illegaly, the islands are not ours. The paramount issue above all other issues to consider is the people who lived there, and the 2 main gripes of the Chagosians were (1) the way in which they were evicted, and (2) the right to go back which has been denied to them until now. The era of colonisation and colonies is long gone, the interests of the people of The Falkland Islands, Gibraltar and all other overseas territories are what count, and the Chagosian Islanders now have what they wanted. What I find particularly distastefull in this debate is that no reference is been made to the gross injustice inflicted on the islanders by the UK. |

We didn't steal anything - the islands were ceded to us by the French after the defeat of Napoleon. Treaty of Paris 1814. |
