Not sure what the argument is for that, tbh. The Representation of the People Act 1918 removed all property qualifications and gave women the vote - at that time we had the largest empire in the world but since then it's all been downhill. Progress? Wealthy white God-fearing men built civilisation and the country that became the envy of the world.

Progress? Is holding a quarter of the world’s population under the cosh something you hanker after? Those halcyon days are long gone. Now the U.K. is on its own, scouring the world for trading partners that offer it more that additional immigration and outlets for Spice Girls’ downloads… you prove my point - expanding the franchise has not been a success.

The point is that 16 and 17 year olds can leave full time compulsory education and go into further education, training, apprenticeships or full time work. Many 16 and 17 year olds are active in politics, and / or have opinions on many issues, they are fully capable of making informed decisions and choices of their own, having been in compulsory education for 11 or 12 years. Voting at 16 is the norm in UK Crown Dependancies - Isle of Man, Guernsey, Jersey, Alderny and now in Scotland and Wales as well as several EU nations. It’s just rather unfortunate that this would probably help "Progressive" political parties, as opposed to the Conservatives. Yet are not capable of making a reasoned choice on whether to buy a lottery ticket or scratch card ,butane refills , alcohol, scissors or outdoor sparklers . Or enter into a legal contract , you need parental permission to get married

Children should not vote. It should only be for adults. and then only adults who own land... Male adults of course, who have reached a minimum age of 30.

Do you remember being 16/17? I do. And my younger self did not need a vote until 18. Indeed I do remember being 16 and 17. Left school aged 16, was never unemployed and always had money in my pocket. Of course that was still living at home. However at age 17 I decided to take the Queens shilling and I never looked back. I cant remember the first time I voted, but I do remember mum telling me how important it was to vote, she took voting very seriously, and she was very Labour, she liked Mr Wilson. I was a kid, OK I was in the army but I was still a kid, I was wasn't interested in politics there were far more exiting things for a testosterone filled 18 year old to be interested in, there was a big wide world out there and I discovered the world was full of girls who wanted to shag me to death, I was an 18 year old with a permanent hard on, I was a kid in a candy store. And just before I was posted out, my younger brother who joined two years after me was posted in, happy days. As it happens a few years later exactly the same thing happened in Germany, we never served together but we did cross paths briefly. Oh yes getting back to thread, perish the thought I should be banned for straying from the OP... yes indeed politics, in later years when I was in other countries I voted by proxy via my mum. Am I giving ther impression I was a mummy's boy? She would have liked that, bless her.

It's OK to have any form of sex at 16 though, which is lamentable.

Only a deranged moron would think a 16 year old is experienced enough to make an informed independent decision like this. The only people who are for it are those who openly support brainwashing and grooming school children.
