AFAIA, the state pension is included as income when assessing tax. I wouldn't know, I'm not an OAP, yet. SRP is a taxable income.

The point is that 16 and 17 year olds can leave full time compulsory education and go into further education, training, apprenticeships or full time work.
Many 16 and 17 year olds are active in politics, and / or have opinions on many issues, they are fully capable of making informed decisions and choices of their own, having been in compulsory education for 11 or 12 years.
Voting at 16 is the norm in UK Crown Dependancies - Isle of Man, Guernsey, Jersey, Alderny and now in Scotland and Wales as well as several EU nations.
Its just rather unfortunate that this would probably help "Progressive" political parties, as opposed to the Conservatives.

As someone who used to be a 16 year old, and indeed a 17 year old, and in later life had no fewar that four children I can confirm that the vast majority of kids are not even slightly interested in politics which is why they don't watch the news and political programmes are always on TV late at night, after the little dears have gone to bed, clutching the device of their choice.

The point in this election is that the Tories said they'll raise the tax free allowance to ensure it stays above the level of state retirement pension.
What this means is that both Labour and Tory will keep the current allowance for working age folks like us. (And therefore with pay increases increasing the total tax take.)

What is special about Income Tax?. Anyone, irrespective of their age, pays income tax if they earn over £1000 a month. THE most important or most relevant issue when casting our votes, is where we believe our tax ought to be spent, or not spent. Income Tax is the most important tax, directly related to work and income. Eligibility to go into full time work, and therefore eligibillity to start paying Income Tax is school leaving age ... 16Sort of Children should not vote. It should only be for adults. If they need an appropriate adult in a police interview, they should not be able to vote!

Is that why the Labour Party prevented them from using sunbeds unsupervised?. I have no particular objection to allowing 16 year olds the vote if as you say they capable of making informed decisions. By the same token then they are informed enough enough to decide whether to buy alcohol, knives, use a sunbed or take part in adult pornography. Or perhaps they are not fully capable of making informed decisions?
