Wales' 20mph rollout chaos: Furious motorists blast 'absolute nightmare' new speed limit which Penny Mordaunt says is 'punishing' drivers as signs are defaced and vehicles do 20 in a 40 zone - and 80,000 sign petition to reverse decision The roll-out of a new 20mph speed limit scheme in Wales has been branded an 'absolute nightmare', with signs vandalised with spray paint and cars travelling at 20 in a 40mph zone. Yesterday, Twatford's Labour government pushed through with their hugely unpopular enforcement of 20mph zones in all built-up residential areas in the country - ostensibly to save lives and cut costs for the NHS. The scheme was blasted as 'insane' by leader of the House of Commons Penny Mordaunt, who said the Welsh excuse for a Government has 'ignored businesses' and 'ignored the public'. She claims the scheme is 'punishing' drivers. An official petition calling for the Welsh government to rescind the go-slow legislation is getting 40 new signatures every minute. It currently has more than 80,000 signatures. The scheme, which meant altering 30,000 road signs at a cost of £32million, has been described as 'anti-worker, anti-road and anti-motorist' by Welsh conservatives who have vowed to repeal it. MailOnline has spoken to 50 people across South Wales since the 20mph limit came in and only two were in favour - and one of them was a non-driver. www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12531453/Wales-20mph-rollout-chaos-Car-filmed-braking-sharply-leaving-30mph-zone-signs-defaced-furious-locals-moan-having-change-second-gear-day.html

Modern cars do not need to be new cars, not the same. 20mph for the sake of children, yeah! How did the children of the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's even ever survive 30mph speed limits? So, a random arbitrary speed limit is introduced by a Labour nut, and Citizen Smith applauds this move. You could go one better CS, you could hit your net zero target and your phoney cry for child safety by making everyone use horse and cart! What's clear here is that Labour are no friend of the working class, this along with ULEZ shows how out of touch Labour are and they look more like a fringe, lunatic green mob with these ludicrious attacks against the motorist. There were far fewer cars on the roads and deaths were disproportionate. It is not arbitrary and if you cannot see that a person hit by a car doing 30mph will suffer worse injuries by someone doing 20, that's your problem. The same sort of rhetoric was used against 70 on the motorways and the 30mph I seem to remember, some people are Neanderthals.

The vast majority of people agree with 20mph where children play or are likely to play but people who don't care about safety shout very loud. The Mail, quite likely, went to a speed limit protest to ask those 50 people, it's just the sort of stunt they would play. Seat belts. Smoking in pubs. Speed camera. drinking and driving. All had their detractors but are now accepted as sensible.

Reducing speed limits saves lives. Who has demanded we live in cave, you don't half exaggerate.

The only figures I recall that are used to back up the argument that a 20mph limit saves lives cite road deaths in the 1990’s compared to road deaths in 2022, after 20 mph limits were introduced. These claims didn’t appear to take account to the general overall downward trend of road fatalities over the last 30 years. There are roads where 20mph is sensible — many residential streets, and areas around schools, are prime examples — but a blanket restriction on all A roads seems too draconian…

The words blanket 20mph have been bandied around a lot and are leading to some confusion. For starters it does not affect roads that are not currently 30mph. This is worth pointing out as there are a few who genuinely think the A55 will be down to 20mph when the changes come in. It is also not a new blanket limit for all 30mph areas.

The post is about Wales. More walking, cycling and playing outside, improved safety, and a more liveable and attractive environment. These are the benefits predicted for the borough as Hackney gets set to roll out a 20mph speed limit on all its main roads.Traffic accidents in Hackney’s residential roads plummeted by up to 50 per cent following the introduction of 20mph limits in these streets in 2008. You can't argue with the facts.

An arsehole who steps out into the road and thereby collides with my bumper at thirty is thrown away from tbe vehicle. A oerson that hits it while i’m doing twenty goes under the wheels How do i know this ? Personal experience Fact is tbe slower you are going the more likely the idiot who did not see you coming is going to be crushed under the bodywork…

You can't argue with the facts. You're quoting from 2015 Hackney Council spin.
Living Streets Charity also threw out random figures saying: "Research shows that those hit at 35mph have a 50 per cent chance of survival, those struck at 30mph have an 80 per cent chance of living, but the survival rate jumps to 97 per cent when hit at 20mph".
None of the advocates for blanket 20mph speed limits use comparable figures. Thankfully, total road fatalities have declined over the years, irrespective of 20mph limits and the increasing number of vehicles on the road.
My prediction is that frustration at crawling along at milk-float speeds and concentrating on the speedo on clear, wide roads is likely to distract drivers' from paying full attention to their surroundings.
Money and effort would be better spent urging cyclists and unlicensed electric bike and scooter riders to obey the highway code — and devising ways of penalising those that contravene traffic rules...

I've lost count of the number of people who are just unaware of traffic as they step out in front of me while continuing their conversations.
And there's also those cyclists who are holding phones to their ears while pedalling themselves through traffic — are they subject to "due care and attention" rules...?
