Best go on a pedal cycle then, Pat. You could go faster on one of those and not get done for speeding.

There were far fewer cars on the roads and deaths were disproportionate. It is not arbitrary and if you cannot see that a person hit by a car doing 30mph will suffer worse injuries by someone doing 20, that's your problem. The same sort of rhetoric was used against 70 on the motorways and the 30mph I seem to remember, some people are Neanderthals. An arsehole who steps out into the road and thereby collides with my bumper at thirty is thrown away from tbe vehicle. A oerson that hits it while i’m doing twenty goes under the wheels How do i know this ? Personal experience Fact is tbe slower you are going the more likely the idiot who did not see you coming is going to be crushed under the bodywork… You really are stooping to new low levels of stupidity.

The post is about Wales. More walking, cycling and playing outside, improved safety, and a more liveable and attractive environment. These are the benefits predicted for the borough as Hackney gets set to roll out a 20mph speed limit on all its main roads.Traffic accidents in Hackney’s residential roads plummeted by up to 50 per cent following the introduction of 20mph limits in these streets in 2008. You can't argue with the facts. You're quoting from 2015 Hackney Council spin.
Living Streets Charity also threw out random figures saying: "Research shows that those hit at 35mph have a 50 per cent chance of survival, those struck at 30mph have an 80 per cent chance of living, but the survival rate jumps to 97 per cent when hit at 20mph".
None of the advocates for blanket 20mph speed limits use comparable figures. Thankfully, total road fatalities have declined over the years, irrespective of 20mph limits and the increasing number of vehicles on the road.
My prediction is that frustration at crawling along at milk-float speeds and concentrating on the speedo on clear, wide roads is likely to distract drivers' from paying full attention to their surroundings.
Money and effort would be better spent urging cyclists and unlicensed electric bike and scooter riders to obey the highway code — and devising ways of penalising those that contravene traffic rules...
Speed facts do not change over time. The relationship between speed and survival rate is well-documented. Studies have shown that even small increases in travel speed can result in large increases in braking distances and impact speed, substantially increasing the risk of a pedestrian, motorcycle, bicycle rider, or baby in a pram being killed or seriously injured1. The risk of injury increases exponentially with impact speed. For example, a crash at 30 mph has twice as much energy and destructive potential as a crash at 20 mph2. In all pedestrian datasets, the risk of fatality increases slowly until impact speeds of around 30 mph. Above this speed, the risk increases rapidly3. It is important to note that the higher the speed a vehicle travels, the greater the likelihood of serious injury or death if there is a crash2.

A person hit by a car doing 20mph will suffer worse injuries than one doing 10mph. What's your point? The only people here that are neanderthals are those who demand we live in caves by candle light and walk to and from work. Of course they will, so you must agree with the 20mph rule. Reducing speed limits saves lives. Who has demanded we live in cave, you don't half exaggerate. No. Because speed limits of 30mph are safer than speed limits of 40mph. You can keep your random arbitrary Labour led nannyism.

Not really. The arrogant islamic twat who strode out into the road while i was test driving the electric van with the sidium sulphur battery back in 2004 bounced off the side wing, the cyclist who hit my car while pedalling like hell through the shopping centre pedestrian area before slamming into my car bounced iff got up and ran off. In contrast one of the county lines off road wheelie merchants who screwed up went right under Andy’s Range Rover and inspected the sump for him ….

Are you happy with using extreme cases to support your view on generality? In general 20mph is safer that 30mph, simple really.

I an my sister started school in the early 50's we walked to schools about 2 miles away with my Mother who taught us how to cross the road safely drummed into us, there were less vehicles on the roads back then no such things as Pelican Crossings, or even Zebra Crossings or islands on the main roads. The cars that were on the roads back then where larger and heavier with big metal bumpers on them.
By the time we were 6 or 7 years of age we walked to school on our own, I remember well at least once a year our Headmaster and a Police Officer would instruct us who to keep ourselves safe telling showing us how to cross the road , by waiting for vehicles to pass and looking left and right as we crossed to road.
If you were lucky enough to have bicycle when you were a little older you would not be allowed by the school to cycle to schools until you had passed the cycle proficiency test and passed it under the guidance of a Police Officer, a Road Safety Officer and the Headmaster one thing you could not do was ride on the pavement on the test.
Now we have over 35 millions vehicles on our roads a totally different scenario, vehicles are much safer better brakes crumple zones rubber bumpers airs bags to reduce impact injuries to those in the vehicle and if a pedestrian is hit, we have speed cameras and other safety measures for a reason, lower speed more chance of stopping quicker than yesteryear
20 mph zones are already in place near me near schools not a problem as such but sometimes difficult to stay at 20mph in an automatic car but it is only in place for a short distance then back up to 30mph , IMO 20mph in built up arears for much longer distances is way over the top .
What really pisses me off is youngsters and adults playing with their mobile phones as they walk on the pavement and keep looking at their phones when they cross to road , they ain't looking what they are doing or looking left and right all the time they are crossing the road as they should, even when riding a bike they play with the dam things.
I am in my 70's and in more danger on the pavement in this day and age than when I was 6 or 7 years of age, from these E scooters, and adults riding bikes and e bikes that can reach over 20 mph coming at me from behind or coming straight at me, I have to get out of their way arrogant buggers, no person under the age of 12 years of age is allowed to ride anything on the pavement, about time something was done to stop them regulate them as well

Because 20mph is safer, especially for kids. Why would anyone argue with measures intended to save children's lives?

Why would anyone argue that bicycles and electric scooters should be able to faster than cars? Nobody does, they should be subject to the same rules as anyone else but policing it is another matter. I would, mind, rather get hit by a bike going at 30mph than a car or van.

There is a petition about the 20mph limits from Wales and has quickly reached 230,000 which means it will need to be discussed in parliament. Another likely vote winner for Sunak as he gets to go up against the Welsh separatists / socialists.
