Which then begs the question of why we are trying to replicate it. we are?

Got a link - because I understood Sunak was asking for France to take back illegals that set off from their territory - I was not aware that he was asking that the UK take in more illegals from the rest of the EU.

'The government is keen to pursue a bilateral returns agreement with Paris, which would allow the UK to immediately return those arriving unlawfully from France.'

If we have no cooperation and zero leverage with other nations ( France) to control out borders then we should apply that leverage to the illegal migrants and traffickers. It was suggested in another forum far far away that we should use our special forces to neutralise the traffickers. They might be right . As well as considering the illegal migrants as criminal aliens , of course. And just how are you going to fins them when they operate ftomm all around the world? More "should" imaginary realities.

Go further does not mean being allowed to return all "illegal" arrivals. Which are not illegal in 9nternational law. But you have already had this explained to you...and you conveniently forget it.

Macron has already said no. Why on earth would he say yes?? This is the UK's sovereign border problem, not his.

So far it has assisted in more returns to Europe than not having it.
And the UK now has no access to a revised programme.
When sovereign UK solves its own problem, get back to me.

Paying £10 Billion for the ability to send 250 asylum seekers back (and get 1500 in exchange) was a deal so bad that not even Sunak would be dumb enough to go for it.
