SNP voters abandon the party after fraud probe arrest of Nicola Sturgeon as new poll suggests independence-backing party will win fewer seats than Labour at the next general election
SNP voters are abandoning the party following the arrest of Nicola Sturgeon in a fraud probe, according to a new poll that makes Labour the largest party in Scotland.
A Panelbase survey for the Sunday Times projects that Scottish Labour would win 26 seats at Westminster, up from one currently.
This would put the party ahead of the SNP, which is predicted to take 21, down from 45 currently.
It would be the first time since 2010 that Sir Keri Starmer's party was the largest Scottish group at Westminster and would be a major boost to his hoes of taking power in Westminster.
The poll was carried out after Ms Sturgeon was held for seven hours last Sunday by detectives investigation the whereabouts of more than £600,000 in donation.
She was later released without charge pending further investigation, and denies any wrongdoing.
The research also found that support for the SNP has dropped, with 34 per cent saying they would vote for the party at the next general election, down five points compared with Panelbase's last poll in March.

That is one poll. Although SNP support has been declining it is still only a snapshot of public opinion. I would wait until other polling companies publish their findings before crowing about the demise of the SNP. One factor that could alter the dynamic is for the party to get shot of Yousaf. He is a clear impediment to a change in fortune with negative approval ratings (-12 in that Panelbase poll). The Nats have a leader in waiting, Kate Forbes comes out top (+3) in the favourability stakes. So, in order to stave off what could be a cataclysmic election result, Forbes should be installed as leader. She is far removed from the present leadership so could help the party next year. scotgoespop.blogspot.com/2023/06/landmark-panelbase-poll-shows-snp-on.html

According to the Mail
Scottish Police are to investigate bombshell claims that officials of the Scottish National Party accepted envelopes stuffed with cash from a relative of one of the party's MPs.
Allegations made by a whistle-blower state that senior party figures received tens of thousands of pounds from a Scottish businessman related to a prominent nationalist politician – and that they broke electoral law by failing to publish details of the gifts.
The claims are made in a letter that was sent last week to Police Scotland and to the Lord Advocate, the country's chief prosecutor – and that has also been seen by The Mail on Sunday.
As part of an investigation called Operation Branchform, police are already looking into separate allegations of fraud in relation to the possible misuse of £600,000 given by donors to the SNP. Now Police Scotland has confirmed that it has received the whistle-blower's letter and that Branchform officers are assessing its claims.
These include allegations the businessman handed 'substantial monetary donations' to SNP officials; that he 'expressed and boasted on several occasions in public spaces that he had donated 'tens of thousands of pounds' to the SNP over many years'; and that he was seen handing over 'cash in white envelopes'.

The SNP are fucked.
It's high time they got absolutely beaten in the elections to the point of losing deposits. Demolish the fascists.

Earlier this week we were advised at the Police Investigation into the missing £600,000 has now developed into an investigation for fraud and misappropriation of money, now the news papers are speculating that charges may be made by this weekend, so the first part of this investigation will be completed, next is the question over the 3.8 Billion pounds sent to the Scottish Government from Westminster.

The SNP are fucked. It's high time they got absolutely beaten in the elections to the point of losing deposits. Demolish the fascists. As a disinterested onlooker, I can see only Labour inflicting losses on the SNP. Of course a few seats might go to Alba, but they’re about as much on the horizon as Reform or Reclaim elsewhere. That might jar with Scots wanting independence, because Labour won’t want to give up its seats because of independence. Nevertheless, if the SNP loses seats to Labour in the next general election, it gives Labour impetus across the UK and leaves the Tories looking for allies to buy in Northern Ireland. If Labour wins the next UK election, that will give it plenty of time to show if it’s better at running the UK than the Tories — currently, this shouldn’t be difficult…
