Outrage??? It's absolutely hilarious! You'll know you're tasting my left-wing outrage if it ever arrives, Red. It'll come sprinkled with ground glass and a side dish of on-the-turn ham. Is on-the-turn ham code for a bi-curious gammon? You’re thinking of mutiny on the bounty surely.

In the spirit of scientific inquiry and as a public service in nudging the discussion a little closer to its original theme, yesterday I conducted a mini-survey into the question as to whether ethnic minorities are over-represented in TV adverts in the UK.
I recorded a three-hour sample on Channel 4 and made a count of the number of adverts where the ethnicity of the principal participants could be reliably determined.
In total there were 107 ads during the three-hour sample period plus perhaps another 15 or so which did not meet the criterion. Of the 107, 46 featured only white participants while 20 did not feature any whites. The remaining forty or so featured mixed ethnicities, including 10 depicting mixed-race relationships. In general it appeared to me that in ads featuring a mix of ethnicities, BAME participants tended to have the principal or more visible role. Also striking was the discrepancy between Black participants and Asians, the former being particularly over-represented.
Note: the white-only category maybe overstated since it includes multiple showings for GTech appliances featuring its (white) designer (9x), the National Lottery (3) featuring two gay white males and Shearings Coaches (3) with all-white clienteles for its coach-trips.

Perhaps the numbers/proportions of different ethnicities in TV and print advertising reflect the (perhaps, additional) audiences the advertisers are intending to reach.
If the usual attitude surveys undertaken after the ad run show a negative effect, the ads will likely be changed or dropped. If they prove positive, the theme might be repeated, or the run extended...

Perhaps. Have you come across any evidence that advertisers are conducting such research into the commercial effect of the 'ethnic balance' in their adverts?
It would be interesting to see some.

To put the earlier 'survey' figures into context, the 2021 Census results indicate that the population of England and Wales was 81.3% white and 18.7% non-white. White includes White British plus White Other, while non-white includes multiple ethnicities and 'mixed'.

I can choose to switch off if its within the content of a programme but its a bit much when it catches you by suprise in an advert while your watching the sports news

All advertising for gambling should be banned in my opinion, gay lesbian, or hetero. Gambling is so damaging to so many people.

If championing diversity resulted in an enhanced roi and thus greater profits I think we would have heard about by now.

I didn’t hear that underrepresenting blacks on adverts affected sales and I doubt that overrepresenting blacks will affect sales either. That doesn’t mean that the former was considered a problem by lefties whereas the latter is not .
