Just saw an advert that amused me.
It was one of those typical family at home adverts pimping a product.
This time the woman was indian, the man was middle eastern, but with a very english looking decor, very english behaviours and with two very English looking kids.
It kinda took me out of the moment and removed any attention from the product being sold and it did make me wonder. Was this a conscious effort to add another dynamic to the covering of bases. reflecting not just diversity but integration too.

Quote:
Broadcasters have overcompensated for a lack of people from ethnic minorities by putting too many black and Asian faces on TV, this has led to a world of deracinated coloured people flickering across our screens - to the irritation of many viewers and the embarrassment of the very people such actions are meant to appease.
If the above paragraph had been written or spoken by a white man, he would have been shouted down as a far right racist bigot. However, the above paragraph was written by Samia Shah who at the time was a member of the BBC's board of directors.

However, the above paragraph was written by Samia Shah who at the time was a member of the BBC's board of directors. Please indulge a slight digression. There's a mystery to solve. When I read the above quote, I was initially struck by Ms. Shah's choice of the lofty word deracinated when a perfectly useful alternative, uprooted, would almost certainly have reached a wider audience. However, I put this down to BBC pretentiousness. More troubling is the contrast between the lofty word deracinated and the sloppy run-on sentence in which it appears. It seems very unlikely that a BBC director would be unable to craft a proper sentence worthy of the Latinate vocabulary she is at pains to showcase, so I wonder if Ms. Shah may have been misquoted. If you have a link that would solve the riddle, I beg your indulgence. If this is a misquote, it may help restore my faith in the BBC.

Ahh yes the link, I will endeavour to find it, one moment...

It doesn't seem so long ago that every advert showed a woman making a man look like a fool. Women have had their turn, black people are having their turn at the moment. Who's next, Red? Will you be able to cope with every ad having a transgender woman or man? Prepare to spend your twilight years glowering furiously at the TV. You know it's coming.

Ah-hah! It appears to be a quote mixed in with some paraphrasing. Mystery solved. Not Shah's exact words. That makes more sense. Thanks for finding the links. I thought Shah was a woman. Turns out he is a man.

I rarely switch the TV on, I'm not really interested in celebrity driven politically correct low brow drivel.

I think they are, aren't they? The irony is beautiful.

Turns out he is a man. The Guardian puts it in quotes so they do appear to be his exact words, or are at least reported to be. The mystery is not solved as deracinated seems to imply that the uprooting was not voluntary and that the 'look test' determines culture.

Okay, I'll try to stomach a little GB 'News' later. I'm confident the ratio of black to white actors in the ads will be the same as on the mainstream channels.

I think Samir Shah words were; "world of deracinated coloured people flickering across our screens - to the irritation of many viewers and the embarrassment of the very people such actions are meant to appease".
That's exactly what was quoted in other publications too.

That's exactly what was quoted in other publications too. Have they taken a poll asking black people how they feel about it? If not, how does he know? I'm sure most black people stopped seeing black people and just saw people as soon as the rest of us did.
