Archbishop of Canterbury condemns Illegal Migration Bill in LordsThe Archbishop of Canterbury will make a rare intervention in the House of Lords on Wednesday, to condemn the Government’s Illegal Migration Bill as it faces its first test in the upper chamber. Justin Welby will argue against the flagship legislation aimed at ensuring people who arrive in the UK in small boats would be detained and promptly removed, either to their home country or a third country such as Rwanda. The intervention, first reported in the i, would mark his second major rebuke of the Government’s treatment of migrants and asylum seekers. youtu.be/66WRbQmW6EISomeone should remind Welby that he is an unelected vicar speaking from an unelected house.

Someone should remind Welby that he is an unelected vicar speaking from an unelected house. That doesn't mean he is wrong.

If he were a vicar in some idylic English rural shire that mass immigration is yet to infect, and spoke such utter bollox, I suspect he would very soon be preaching to an empty church. Not that it would unduly worry him, like the BBC he gets paid regardless of what people think.

The Church of England should not have their people in the HoL there should not be an established church and they and all the others should not have charitable status.
The church is one of englands largest landowners is worth around £9 billion and gets around £1billion every year in interest yet cadges off its dwindling band of worshipers.
He’s entitled to his view but not his position in the Palace of Westminster.

Maybe if C of E clergy spoke out more strongly about the problems and and hardships in this life, rather than limiting themselves to peddling myths about the afterlife, churches might be more full. Let’s face it, this proposed new immigration legislation won’t stop the rising immigration numbers — its only purpose is to give the impression that the government is doing something about it…

It's all show for the rubes. Tories have had 13 years to do something about immigration yet here we are and it's worse than ever.

It is the job of gods appointed vicar on earth to promote god, it is the job of elected councillors and politicians to represent their constituents. Welby should stick to matters spiritual and leave politics to elected politicians.

The immigration problem would of course be sorted in no time if pro EU, pro mass immigration socialist lawyer Starmer was in charge.

The only real way to solve it is to invest in the places they are coming from and stop starting wars in the middle east. Maybe do something about the climate crisis too so their crops don't keep failing.

What are you suggesting, pouring £billions into Syria or Afghanistan just to look virtuous while people in this country are struggling to pay energy bills?

He's a Christian, what do you expect him to do? It's a Christian value to stand up for the weak and treat others as you would want to be treated in return. I'm not saying I agree with him, but I certainly think he has every right to stand up in the house of lords and speak his mind on such matters.

Christians are a dying breed in this once Christian country, thanks largely to the fact that the people who are invading us, the people who Welby is sticking up for, are not Christians. Indeed many of them have a very dim view of Christianity and why shouldn't they, they are laughing at us because we are weak and they know it. When Nigel Farage spoke, remainiacs scoffed and said he's not even an MP. Welby is not even a politician. Rather than criticising the elected government from an unremoveable position of unelected privilage, perhaps he should concentrate on the day job and put some thought into reviving Christianity in this once Christian country.

Not to look virtuous, to stem the flow of refugees. We were happy enough to pour billions into fighting wars in the ME. Now we are reaping what we sowed.
