Renewables are great when the sun is shining, or the wind is blowing. In a cloudy winter anticyclone there's not much of either. Nuclear is the reliable clean option, but we should have built more years ago. Tidal barriers are also reliable, but hugely expensive and ecologically questionable if blocking an estuary such as the Severn. Fracking would help make us more energy resilient. Gas is not a fossil fuel. Good points except how do you work out gas is not a fossil fuel,it is. Of course it is. However due to the current difficulties in the EU, the European Commission has decided that power plants burning gas can be considered generators of green energy. Yes I know, talk about political expediency.

OK, if you say so. What has been fossilised to form methane? Where does natural gas come from? No one mentioned methane Now, here's a thing. Natural gas is mostly methane and ethane. It's not like coal. It's not like oil. So, I'll ask again, "What has been fossilised to form Natural Gas". When you realise it is nothing, you might realise that natural gas is not a fossil fuel. I hope this helps with your understanding.

Ok, I get your point, it is not a fossil fuel in the sense that its not fossilised plant material. However it (Methane) is made from ancient plant material that has been trapped deep under ground (Trapping their carbon content) When humans extract the gas from deep under ground and set light to it, they release that trapped carbon as Co2. Thus having the same effect on the atmosphere as burning oil or coal. (Though not as bad)

Wait a minute - do you not know how natural gas was formed?? If you're just being tediously pedantic then just get it out of your system, otherwise please tell us your version of the "creation" of natural gas. We're a bit lacking on daft conspiracy theories here and need a laugh. Either way gas is a reasonable short term option for the UK, better to stick to home resources than relying on foreign gas of course. That is the choice right now - fracking or foreign, saying "no" to fracking means you're saying "yes" to Russian/Algerian/Qatari/etc. gas. Some of us did mention this a few years ago but you pro-foreign gas guys won - perhaps due Russian interference on social media? Or maybe too many people are just thick? Renewables are of course the medium to long term solution. Even nutty climate change deniers are probably ok with that for energy security reasons but get distracted when twats like Just Stop Oil pop up. Climate activists that actually care about the future (do they exist?) should try to unite common causes instead of creating a vicious divide that is more entertaining for them and provides them a more lucrative social media following.

Oops … where did the Head of Quadrilla scuttle off to? … hey Deleted (0posts)… don’t drop your proverbial ‘stink bomb’ … and suddenly LEAVE! …. wait for my reply: To all pro-Fracking/Nuclear Tories and other numbskulls on this thread …. how much are you prepared to long term badly toxically pollute OUR Country … for your short term flash-in-the-pan financial gain? … $$$ profit and gas yields that are only worthwhile … the more dangerous the pollution? … and the higher the chemical bill?… and the higher the clean-up costs? When people like you and the nuclear lobby have dumped your sh*t … and have scuttled off to America … and the Tory/Labour Shires …. 1) we have water supplies we can’t drink, reservoirs contaminated. 2) beaches we can’t use, seafood we can’t eat 3) flooded farmland we can’t cultivate any longer … after your nuclear containers and toxic fracking pools have leaked for a 1,000 years! 4) caves and underground systems we can no longer explore 5) and a bankrupt overburdened NHS that can’t cope with the extra cancers and health issues you morons have generated … Now bugger off back to the Asylum and HELL you came from. 👹☠️ … NOW YOU ARE ‘DISMISSED’ … AND CAN LEAVE THIS FORUM … AND PREFERABLY THE COUNTRY TOO … YOU ODIOUS LITTLE POLLUTING CREEPS!!🤬 Over and out.

Good post. Just to add to that, we currently get 20% of our gas from Qatar and it has just signed a 27 year LNG deal with China. We're going to be extremely short of energy as we fumble and fall. Our industry will close or move out for one thing.
