But has it irrevocably hurt the industry and thrown people out of work? Hospitality is still short of staff, brewers are surviving at a level enough to support demand, and the majority of drinkers can still access a bar or pub. Perhaps it was the business model and offer that was wrong…

And claims by the tobacco industry and its addicts are going to say another. Smoking harms smokers and others and costs the whole community. Ban it, totally…Yes, that will solve the problem. Prohibition having worked so well in the past.

Prohibition having worked so well in the past. As you say “in the past”. So what prohibitions are you referring to, and where and when were they…?

How is the war on drugs going?. I would simply point out that even some in your own Party advocate legalising some drugs...

Perhaps it was the business model and offer that was wrong… In Beccles where I grew up there were 44 pubs when I got my first job in one aged 14. There are now about 6. I'm not saying that is all down to the smoking ban. There have also been cultural changes. People drink at home in front of the TV more than they used to and this has been a large part of the break down of community. Villages have been particularly hard hit. The places where villagers would meet were the pub, church, the shop and the school. All of which are disappearing fast. It wasn't even necessary. The EU regulations (aimed at protecting workers) made allowances for smoking pubs and non-smoking pubs and even pubs with separate well ventilated smoking rooms but New Labour chose the most draconian option.
