The simple answer is that we are an island off the coast of Europe . There isnt a great need to know other European languages. When I stayed in Nice it was a 30 minute train ride to Italy . Many European mainland have greater ties to bordering countries , travel through those countries ,some even have been invaded or invaded bordering countries . The usual suspects will criticise Brits for not learning languages that they don’t need to learn but that’s what they do best , criticise for no reason . I suspect the same people would cry ‘ racist ‘ at those who criticise migrants that fail to learn English when they live in England . I always thought that Europe's conglomeration of small countries was the reason that people needed to acquire one another's languages for the purpose of trading. Over time, English has become dominant, but that is no reason to believe it will be permanent. It can go the way of Latin.

every language spoken in these islands is a European language. For a small island , there historically has been a great need to speak and understand various European languages , and your own English language is essentially a mix of French German and danish. So not sure about the geographical argument. Historically and currently 20 miles of water has never been a barrier to European languages . It has because it it were not there would be more Brits speaking the various European languages . do you not see the irony of a non homogenous group you call brits , who dont speak British , but speak European languages ? why aren't you speaking native British then ?

why oh dear? dont you think the natives should speak their native language? I mean , we hear it every day from the brit nats on forums like this. We have happy jack in scotland having a meltdown about Gaelic roadsigns , and John of gwent demanding welshmen speaking welsh get deported to .....errrr .................fuck knows. meanwhile. , the brits are too lazy to even bother learning their own language , and want to speak some half French part danish European language from northern Germany instead. oh dear....

My point is that there no compelling reading to speak mainland Europe languages in the UK because there is no need to. In parts of Europe there is a need to and there are historical reasons that it happens . For instance the UK was successfully invaded by ether Germany or France then there would be far more French and or German speakers in the UK. Re the Norman invasion of England .. But disregarding that , if there was a need to speak European languages in the UK then more UK people would speak them .

The English have already been deprived of their native language ,anglo saxon , and a half French language forced on them instead , with a bit of a pr stunt , they called it English . Its already happened ,and will happen again .

English as a language is nearly 1600 years old , and the native English were German speakers , whose language was virtually indistinguishable for centuries from west German. Your nobility spoke French similarly for centuries , and from what I recall , the House of Lords still use French in their opening ceremonies. English is a product of European invasions. If you hadn't been successfully invaded , england and its language wouldn't exist.

English isnt britians native , or official language. There is two native British languages that I know of , interrelated and my question once gain why if you identify as a brit dont you speak your own language , British ? The germans speak German , French speak French , and so on.

There’s nothing stopping ‘ natives’ speaking their own languages . The average Glaswegian can easily find the language of his ancestors online and learn it . From then in he refuse to speak any other language except that . However , he’s not going to , is he?

Has anyone except yourselves ever stopped you brit learning and speaking British as an every day community language?

Welsh and Cornish are the native British languages , both are being spoken today. Why aren't you learning British is my question ? Why are you writing to me in a European language instead of native British from these islands ?

Maybe you are annoyed because you have been reminded of the fact that Brits do not tend to speak European languages because they don’t need to .
