The Spanish Empire (upon which the sun never set) built on the gold and silver taken from Spain's conquests in the Americas by Spanish Conquistadors. Began to falter as other European countries began to help themselves to Spain's ill gotten hoards of gold and silver, and eventually entered the Americas themselves.
The eventual downfall of the Empire was caused by the "Black Legend". The Black Legend was the approach taken all over Europe, it was a plague of lies, insinuations, exaggerations and mass denigration of the Spanish. As recorded in history.
So basically this thread is not about the downfall of the Spanish Empire, it is about the apparent reality that the Conservative Party knew of the "Black Legend" and learnt their political tactics from it. A tactic apparently eagerly absorbed and clearly used by so many of their political followers.

Why are you posting about Spanish Empire on a Westminster thread, rambling on about the Black Legend, you're losing the plot.

It is more apparent as the works of historical revisionism against the British Empire and the British depicting the Empire as a despotic one with no saving graces and the British as not just a mongrel nation of no specific identity but culturally lacking and historically evil. The previous railing against Spain was mainly from Spain's enemies as regards Britain it seems to come from within from the intelligentsia and many new arrivals.

As usual your post looks like making excuses in order to create your own personal opinions. An escape route from direct debate, as per the OP.

I was giving a much closer example of the 'black legend' style from modern times much more relevant than 'the Tories have adopted the tactics of telling lies'. I agree they have been telling lies but in the political arena nothing new there. It is not escaping from direct debate it is framing your OP with much more relevance into the modern context. By all means disagree but certain points are of significant comparison. Propaganda is used to belittle one's targets and the British Empire is currently suffering the same type of denigration as the Spanish Empire did largely based on corrupted facts, lies and insinuation as official policy and aided by official institutions.

The Black Legend (Spanish: Leyenda negra) or the Spanish Black Legend (Spanish: Leyenda negra española) is a purported historiographical tendency which consists of anti-Spanish and anti-Catholic propaganda.
Its proponents argue that its roots date back to the 16th century, when Spain's European rivals were seeking, by political and psychological means, to demonize the Spanish Empire, its people, and its culture, minimize Spanish discoveries and achievements, and counter its influence and power in world affairs.[1][2][3]
According to the theory, Protestant propaganda published during the Hispano-Dutch War and the Anglo-Spanish War against the Catholic monarchs of the 16th century fostered an anti-Hispanic bias among subsequent historians. Along with a distorted view of the history of Spain and the history of Latin America, other parts of the world in the Portuguese Empire were also affected as a result of the Iberian Union and the Luso-Dutch Wars.[1] Although this 17th-century propaganda was based in real events from the Spanish colonization of the Americas, which involved atrocities, the theory of the Leyenda
Negra suggests that it often employed lurid and exaggerated depictions of violence, and ignored similar behavior by other power

Yes, you totally missed the point of the op. The point being that lies, insinuations, denigration and so on by many Tories and by many of their supporters on this forum, is exactly what I have been posting against for around twelve months. I have even explained what I was doing and why.
