"Under new plans, smoking could be banned in pub gardens, outdoor restaurants, and outside hospitals and sports grounds" www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cg79ym5mrzyoMixed feelings about this, outside hospitals sure, but pub beer gardens? Isn't this going to deliver another blow to the already ailing pub industry? Of course 80,000 smoking related deaths a year is horrific but I'm not sure how much of an impact banning smoking in pub beer gardens is going to have.

Leave things as they are. Don't make them worse.

Let's kill pubs totally.
After all, every last piece of Britishness must be destroyed.

So all the lost tobacco tax revenue, that means the tax payers have to plug that black hole, and he's banging on about how much money and strain it's putting on the NHS, no mention of how tens of thousands of illegals are putting a even bigger strain on the NHS, he just avoids any mention or any indication illegal migrants are to blame, it's everyone's fault but theirs, and every British tax payer will have to suffer financially to keep supporting the illegals, including the pensioners, the disabled are next on the Starmer hit list.

Typical left wing authoritarian socialist government, all they want to do is impose restrictions and ban things, including free speech. My only thought is, how long before the riots?..

Don't listen to that old bollox, just about everyone in the whole country once smoked and the NHS still managed to survive.

As an ex smoker I personally don't give a flying one if they ban smoking full stop . I do see the smokers side of it though and thinking back to when I did smoke would probably be thinking about ignoring this latest attack on our freedoms . Who exactly is going to Police people lighting up in the garden or outside the bistro ? What about walking home after a night out ,will smokers have to put it out every time they walk past McDonalds or Leroys finest Halal Jerk Chicken ?
Chaos will ensue ,if its a law that cannot be policed its a bad law and this one is

Don't listen to that old bollox, just about everyone in the whole country once smoked and the NHS still managed to survive. Very fair point. Just had a quick shufty... in the 1960's - 70% of men and 40% of women were regular smokers. Today 14% of men and 11% of women are regular smokers. So yes, the impact of smoking on the NHS is obviously a lot less today than it was years ago.

But I don't think smoking should be banned, especially in pub gardens. What with heating costs and the inevitable rise in booze duty in Octobers budget the pub industry is having enough of a bad time without more nanny state restrictions. You ask who would police such restrictions. Personally I think there are plenty of small minded types who look for offence who would be only too willing to discreetly phone the thought police.
