Southgate gone, that's the good news. But still some concerning comments coming out of FA Headquarters: Football Association chief executive Mark Bullingham said "we have an interim solution in place if it is needed" and will not comment further on the process until a new boss is appointed"Oh gawd, does that mean Eddie Izzard as Caretaker Manager until an Identikit Southgate has passed all the various Wokeness confirmation tests necessary before a new full time appointment can be confirmed ? And jolly good riddance, but the rot and decadence at the core of English football remains.
I hope that the rumours about Southgate going to United turn out to be groundless. I'm pretty sure though that Jim Ratcliffe did not get to be the richest man in England by indulging in woolly utopianism and social engineering, although the co-owners might be tempted if only by the commercial possibilities in a new line of St Gareth merchandise.
Some further ominous remarks.
Southgate: ""I hope we get behind the players and the team at St George’s Park and the FA who strive every day to improve English football, and understand the power football has to drive positive change."
Bullingham: "We look back at Gareth’s tenure with huge pride – his contribution to the English game...and in culture transformation has been unique."
You can say that again.
Plus ça change...

I hope that the rumours about Southgate going to United turn out to be groundless. So do I. If he went there, he'd repeat the kind of successes Alex Ferguson used to have. I'd much rather he went to a poorer team and achieved success with an underdog.

Their darkies were better than our darkies, and we had many more of them. More, in fact on the field at the final whistle than at the kick-off.
"Darkies" not heard that term for a long while. Is it acceptable nowadays?

The early rounds of the FA Cup are always worth watching for fans of real English football. In the meantime, there's always the Tour de France. The only darkie among the almost 200 riders has won a couple of easy stages, flat sprints, but is languishing in 111th place in the general classification. The first black African to win a stage in the Tour, Biniam Girmay (Eritrea) says there should be more black riders in the peloton but since the private company Groupe Amaury which owns the Tour is a far cry from the FA he's not likely to get his wish granted anytime soon. Thankfully at least one European cultural institution appears safe from incursionists for the foreseeable future. i know you object to me mentioning united how would you react to being called a Nazi?

I would consider it a very silly thing to calling be someone you don't even know, perhaps an indication of a stunted worldview and also a lack of imagination.

"Darkies" not heard that term for a long while. Is it acceptable nowadays? These words are a bit like fashion in that they seem to come and go. I remember when "black" was regarded as insulting but now it's the preferred term. "Negro" used to be technical term. "Coloured" used to be OK too - now replaced with "of colour" (??). It probably won't be long before sambo is back in fashion.

I think that the danger of Southgate's outspoken support of "Diversity, equality and inclusion" is that it may get in the way of an unbiased selection of the team. It certainly does in the case of the BBC's choice of presenters (or "customer facing employees") and they employ some bloody awful presenters because of it. Southgate should be "colour blind". The fact that he plainly isn't is a bad sign. I would sack him for that alone. There should be no place for politics in sport. He's done something right because England have done better under his leadership than under any manager since Alf Ramsey. Statistics can only tell you so much, Vinny. The argument is that Southgate should have done "better" with the players and funding he had. If you look at statistics you would draw the conclusion that Lewis Hamilton is the greatest F1 driver of all time, but that would be very short-sighted. For almost all his career Hamilton had the best car. Alonso once said that, given his car, most of the F1 drivers could win the championship. As soon as hamilton didn't have the best car he got beaten - even by his rookie team mate George Russell.

England recruit from the Premiership, a league dominated by imported talent, there isn't enough locally trained talent to select from.
The top tier need to train more locals. Southgate did ok with what's available.

Southgate did ok with what's available. I thought he recruited from the most successful teams in the Premiership and in Europe.

Teams whose successes are off the backs of imports.
