Behave yourself Steve, you know perfectly well we have never fully adopted the metric system. I still work in feet & inches, and I'm 14½ stone. I've never asked the gaffer at the local for a litre of beer, and the max motorway speed limit is 70mph not 112kph. The reason we haven't adopted metrication is because we don't like uppity foreigners telling us how to live, and maybe because historically we're close to the US who has not adopted metrication and is the biggest economy in the world. As for your adoration of the EU. Never forget, the EU is an imposed and unremovable by any democratic means monstrosity that survives in spite of democracy, not because of it. The UK is not totally metric, yet, but many made and sold in this country are measured in metric. The Metric system being a better system than imperial. T he US is in a similar position. The UK is a similar "unremovable by any democratic means monstrosity" to the EU. Just on a smaller scale. The USA runs most of aviation and it's very rare to find anything that is measured in metric. But of course they have more bloody sense than to adopt a system which is total crap.

But you have to admit that the U.K. has adopted the metric system when and where it matters. Wavelengths were never imperial, most technical work and engineering is metric nowadays, wheel sizes are in inches for historical reasons rather than geographical, and the US isn’t particularly imperial either — it often uses its own measurements and adaptations in industry (particularly automotive) and the home. For example cooking measures are often cups, and their pints and gallons are smaller than imperial. But it is also slowly turning to an SI country. Metrication got a spurt in the US about 20 years ago when a Mars orbiter was lost because part of the contract was calculated in imperial when the specification should have been metric. Weights and measures on the UK high street were kept imperial in certain instances because it was felt the elderly wouldn’t cope — and it’s true many did find it confusing. But the terminally bewildered are dropping off the twig, and metric is becoming increasingly favoured…

But the terminally bewildered are dropping off the twig, and metric is becoming increasingly favoured… I agree, when and where it matters. The EU attempted to force the UK to accept metrication, that particular diktat failed. Industry has largely accepted it due to trading with the EU. The US is very imperial, I watch a popular US Youtuber who's an engineer and works totally in imperial. He has to go metric when buying parts from outside of the US but generally he is 100% imperial, and yes I'm aware that US gallons are not the same as UK gallons, but they are still imperial. To say imperial was kept in this country because the elderly wouldn't cope is absolute nonsense. As I said, the EU attempted to force metrication on us and the backlash was spectacular, so it was dropped early 2000's something like that. Which is why we still drink pints drive in MPH and farmers use acres, which is an imperial measure.

Well to take just the first of your questions, Yes. In 1965 the British Standards Institute following the Board of Trade's lead moved towards so called 'hard metrication' hansard.millbanksystems.com/lords/1970/nov/30/metrication You probably blamed the EU every time it rained, you stubbed your toe or when England lost to Germany in the Word Cup. I suggest you actually read some of the thousands of posts you've seen over the years refuting your obsessive demonisation of the EU based on no logic at all. Behave yourself Steve, you know perfectly well we have never fully adopted the metric system. I still work in feet & inches, and I'm 14½ stone. Oh do fuck off making false accusations about me. You know full well just earlier I was criticising the EU. It's far from perfect, badly flawed in parts even (but we should have given that deal a chance). As for metric maybe you should beat up on Jonksy as it was he that posted the false story about metrication being forced on all of us.

The EU did attempt to force metrication on us, and got fucked off.

We joined the EU in 1993 (the EEC in 1973)
The British Standards Institute under direction form the Board of Trade were imposing metrication from the mid 1960s
You do know that time doesn't go backwards don't you and that 1965 is 8 years before we joined? Maybe not

There is bugger all that the EUSSR hasn't fucked around with and made a balls up of it whilst doing it.

Wonder who came up with that idea...
