The housewife in Tesco's must be distraught.... I thought Brexit would make British produce cheaper. Farmers would flourish. Fishermen would scoop the treasures of the sea. Britain would rule the waves again. It could do ANYTHING because no one could tell the UK what to do. And then you applaud the signing of trade deal that means Australia can refuse your exports and forces you to accept theirs!! That's some progress! Some sovereignty! Created by the same idiots who sold you Brexit. Nobody is forcing anyone to do anything. If the housewife in Tesco's does not want to buy cheaper meat then she doesn't have to - there is no shortage of more expensive alternatives.

British farmers are more competitive against EU farmers. The good ones are flourishing. The good fishermen are selling more to the UK market, they do after all have the lions share of our quota now. And the FTA with Australia means we're selling more to them than we did in the days of the common tariff policy and bilateral protectionism.

Read Monbiot's criticisms of the CAP and re-evaluate your position. I'm sure he's changed his view since 2018 On Farming subs post Brexit. You do know George is very anti Capitalism. The man who camped with Greenham Common women and got terrorised for being a man lol!

A "go slow" convoy of more than 120 tractors is making its way around Westminster tonight as campaigners demand action on food security. Organised by Save British Farming and the Kent Fairness for Farmers group, they are calling for an end to a number of post-Brexit trade deals, which they claim are allowing imports into the country that fall short of UK standards. The campaigners have pointed to deals with New Zealand, Australia, and the CPTPP deal with 11 countries including Canada, Japan and Mexico, as well as saying they are no longer on a level playing field with European farmers, who still receive subsidies from the EU and can import their goods across the Channel. The group also claims there is a lack of import checks allowing sub-standard food into the country, as well as products being labelled with a Union flag despite not having been grown or reared in Britain. The farmers in the EUSSR are blocking Brussels lefty old bean. Why did you fail to fail to report that fact?
Protests by farmers in Brussels turned violent Tuesday, as EUSSR agriculture ministers met to ease a crisis that has led to months of protests across the bloc.
Hundreds of tractors sealed off streets close to the EUSSR headquarters to protest what they see as excessive red tape and unfair trading practices.

This isnt about the housewife, though you need reminding that many men use supermarkets too. It is about the gross inequality worth billions of pounds you have signed away in a celebrated trade deal represented on your side by a lettuce. Brexit promised new improved trade deals contributing to a new world of British power in the global marketplace. It used to export beef to Australia when in the EU. Now it cant...and has opened its legs to billions of pounds worth of imports it didnt used to have to take. A Brexit bonus for Australia, as well as the pollution cost of hauling animal meat half way around the world. And no, it isnt cheaper than British beef. No one can justify that trade deal unless you cant face admitting the folly you created.

Remoaners…Brexit is a failure because we can buy cheaper beef …. lol. Australian beef is not cheaper. There is just a hell of a lot more of it because Lettuce Liz agreed to it. I thought Brexit meant that the UK could make its own decisions. Well that one was a very valuable damp squib. It isnt enough to make your own decisions. You have to know what you are doing.

The reasons for each protest are different. I would worry about stupid Brexit politicians signing away the value of British farming first and let European farmers deal with their own issues. Which, if you read to the bottom of the link, it has done.

Surely the point is the one you raised in your first post - the British consumer is getting access to cheaper food. Now if you wish to argue that cheaper food is not a benefit then feel free, but in a cost of living crisis I doubt you will find much support for that view.

I see that Starmer's enthusiasm for re negotiating Brexit has been dampened by the EU refusing to negotiate anything. This might be a good thing, those on the left looking at EU membership through rose tinted specs might wake up once they realise how intractable the EU really are, and then perhaps a Starmer Government might start putting the UK first and stop trying to hand it over to the EU. It was the astounding stupidity of the EU when dealing with Lord Cameron that got Brexit off the ground, now it looks like they will replicate that to ensure that we don't rejoin, good for them I say. The Tories might be crap, but they are steadily gaining trade deals around the world, importantly in the US as well, I just hope that Starmer keeps up the drive to sign up more trade deals and doesn't supinely try and get us back into Europe by the back door, it is encouraging that the EU will resist that. I see that Sweden is now having deep internal thoughts about Swedexit, good for them.
