A Labour candidate for the up and coming Rochdale by-election was secretly recorded telling a "community meeting": "The Egyptians are saying that they warned Israel 10 days earlier... Americans warned them a day before [that] there's something happening... They deliberately took the security off, they allowed... that massacre that gives them the green light to do whatever they bloody want."Mr Ali has apologised for the comments, and the party line is that it is too late to replace the candidate. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-68267951This is a tough one for Starmer (whose wife is Jewish). Does he keep the candidate and look a total hypocrite, but win the by-election, or ditch him and lose more Muslim voters. Who would be a party leader lol.

Is indeed a tricky situation. My understanding they can’t take him off the ballot even if they want too. I believe George Galloway is involved too (somewhat surprised he is still alive tbh. ) Ironically has to be a suspicion there is some truth in his comments. Very hard to believe that Israeli intelligence was completely unaware of such a big attack.

Still the lesser intelligent will celebrate such foolishness and distortions.

Are you saying the story is made up? That would be remarkably stupid as I quite clearly mentioned the Labour Candidate has admitted it and apologised. Either way your comment has nothing to do with topic. Starmer has a tough choice, does he ditch the candidate and lose the by-election, or stick with him and look a hypocrite.

All he cares about is winning the election, and that is all that will inform his decision, principles be damned. read what I written about George Galloway where do you think his principles stand . I am not a supporter of Galloway so have no interest in where his principles are - whatever they may or may not be. He is a disingenuous liar and person of poor character and an ego trip on legs, living proof that the left is not immune to dodgy characters being amongst their ranks. He is a large ego masking an insecure personality within - as is often the case with over large egos. For one thing he needs constant reaffirmation from those around him about his wondrousness, and feeds off people agreeing with every word he says. He cannot handle even political comrades daring to disagree with him. I myself personally communicated with him on twitter, until I had the gall to think for myself and disagree with him, at which point he blocked me, lol. Trust me, someone who is blocked by George Galloway and who sees through him is not going to be his biggest fan. So I have no need to read what you have written about Galloway. I do not need to be persuaded that he is a wrong un. I already know it. I wish I could say the same for some of my former left wing comrades who still think the sun shines out of his fundament.

I think he'll stick with being a hypocrite and pandering to the Muslim mob, since his support from them has dropped off somewhat. Plus, he won't want to put a too big-a target on his back for a nutty extremist to explode over.

I think they are sticking with him for demographic reasons, because 6.5% of the population is Muslim, but only 0.5% is Jewish. A tough one though, when he has put so much emphasis on Labour being the party of morals, as opposed to the debauched Tories. Should be an interesting election, with everybody having a camera on their phone, it is going to get really dirty.

The problem Starmer has is that Labour have always polled rather well amongst both Muslims and Jews.
But it is very difficult to do that now with the situation in the middle east galvanising both to hate or mistrust each other.
The scenes we saw on October 7th in Israel, and the scenes in Gaza since then have galvanised both in partisan ways.
Treading a path that is acceptable to both sides is extremely difficult. When Labour supported the oppressed Palestinians they mostly had the Muslim vote in the bag, but Corbyn's previous associations with Hamas - real or exaggerated - and the highly effective weaponization and hugely exaggerated extent of perceived antisemitism put off many Jews. Though it is notable that the instant Starmer became leader this weaponization immediately stopped.
Now that Labour is led by someone who went along with the demonisation, has a Jewish wife (nothing at all wrong with that but bad actors amongst the Muslim community would use that against him) and leads a party highly sympathetic to Israel in spite of it having a far right government, and is crucially mostly silent about the oppression of the Palestinians, many Muslims are deserting Labour.
With extremist opinions widespread on both sides, it is difficult to see how Labour can keep both on side. And Labour's support for Israel will of course be exploited by bad actors like Galloway, whose ideological dishonesty in pursuit of his own agenda is clearly signposted by his support for economically left wing ideas being combined with support for right wing conservative social nostrums put about by Islamists.
You will for example often hear Galloway decrying grotesque levels of economic inequality yet having little to say very often about women's rights or gay rights, or social liberalism. He is clearly trying to latch on to the Muslim vote which Labour is losing, choosing constituencies with large numbers of Muslims to challenge Labour in. He is unlikely to win but he clearly hopes to damage Labour and thus be seen to be furthering his own cause and that of Muslims.
He aims to build a political fan base built upon socialism and islamism in uneasy combination, grafting the support of Muslims on to support from left wingers. In this way he plans to do a Farage on the left, building a coalition of support that can ultimately wag the establishment dog and drag it in his direction. He is unlikely to succeed in my view both because Muslims themselves are still a relatively small minority of the overall population and he is unlikely to persuade even all of these, and also because he lacks what Farage often enjoyed, which is widespread support amongst influential sections of the media.
But there are pockets in certain areas of high density population like in the big cities, where Muslims make up a large chunk of the local electorate, and he clearly hopes that in one of these he can cause an upset by actually winning and thereby entering parliament. And gaining massive publicity for his favourite cause, the promotion of the perceived importance of himself.

Electoral law requires that by this stage of the game, no change in the ballot paper can be allowed There is one way to deal with it though. The death of a candidate causes all nominations to be void and a new writ is called. It happened to St Julians AND Malpas wards in Znewport about a decade ago. Perhaps the csndidate should seek to stay away from tennis courts.

Source of the belief that the Israeli government facilitated the Hamas attack (but didn't expect it to be on the scale it was) .... Netanyahu's political opponents ... who were responding to information they received from within the security forces. This accusation has been published in Israeli newspapers. Warnings passed to the security authorities by observers of suspicious activity close to the fence didn't receive the appropriate attention. Some of these observers had told their friends and family that they expected an attack.
This belief that Netanyahu "allowed" Hamas to build up their strength so that he could "deal with them" once and for all is widespread in Israel. Even American Jews are saying it (and getting arrested when they demonstrate in US cities). Netanyahu's supporters are saying things like: "Just because an individual or an organisation is Jewish doesn't mean that they can't be Antisemitic". Netanyahu's government is a coalition of Popularist Nationalists and Religious parties. The opposition is described as "Secular".
