Farmers in this neck of the woods are very aware of rural crime, particularly poaching or rustling. They tend to be close nit, and don't take prisoners. One farmer has a large sign on the entrance to his long drive that says 'Trespassers will be shot'. You will of course say rubbish he wouldn't be allowed to put up such a sign. I promise you, that sign has been up for two or three years at least. The farmer in question is not a recluse, he is a larger than life personality, if you don't know him you know of him. And I have absolutely no problem in saying that if he saw anyone stealing or slaughtering his livestock, he would shoot them. And so he bloody well should.

Thanks for your reply rr I watched a special report on rural crime on BBC NEWS and they was saying that its gone beyond poaching and rustling .
They said organized crime gangs was behind the crime and they was taking high tech equipment like sat nav equipment from tractors etc.
Has for allowing farmers to shoot trespassers for me its a no no we can't allow people to take the law into there hands.

TTL, some farmers are fighting back. They have drones and cameras and because gates are blocked thieves & poachers have to walk quite a distance. If thieves are seen most farmers wont bother the police unless something serious happens. What's the use of calling the police when it takes them half an hour to get to the scene. Unless it's Friday or Saturday, in which case forget any police response because they are busy dealing with drunks in Stafford. Which is why some farmers will shoot.

Don't you think that a rise in poverty in rural areas is responsible for the rise in crime.

Don't you think that a rise in poverty in rural areas is responsible for the rise in crime. Do you have a clue about anything? Much of rural crime is committed by people from urban areas. The majority of those are not poor, they're just criminals and many of them are from the traveller community, same as most scrap collectors who drive around estates.

He's free to put up the sign, just not free to shoot you. You can't even prosecute someone for trespass unless they cause criminal damage. Trespassing alone without criminal damage is a Tort law, where the victim needs to show financial loss from the act of trespass.

If you drive a vehicle onto farm land late at night you are likely to find your exit blocked by a tractor and plough. Farmers keep in touch and report lights or activity to each other as it takes too long for the police to respond and many had lost valuable equipment.

I think you'll find it's more to do with Pikeys than Tories, but don't worry - if Labour get in no one will be able to afford anything worth nicking.

If I'm honest most of the rural crime where I live is carried out by the traveller community. Dog thefts are particularly popular at the moment and a raid a mile from my home recovered 44 lost and loved pets.
