If you could go to the World Cup in Qatar, would you go, considering the issues around human rights? I hate football, but lets suppose it was a performance of something I would like to see. If it were the case that it were in a stadium where it was pushing LGBT crap I'd probably boycott it. I'm on the other side of the fence and would strongly object to the politicisation of an enjoyment of mine. It happened once in my local town and the speaker was forced off stage by and irate audience. yes, we all know about you being on the other side of the fence and your objection to the politicization of an enjoyment of yours. heaven forbid someone would draw you out of your closet

Impressive result for SA, to be sure - I didn't watch it - and a huge propaganda gift to one of the most odious, murderous, regimes on the planet.
I wonder if brown envelopes were involved.

Very true. I wasn't so much cheering for the Saudis as against the Argies. If anything, the ref was working as hard as he could get away with to assist Argentina though. I think it was a well deserved win for the better team on the day. Sure, on paper Argentina should have run away with this game but as they found out it's not played on paper it's played on grass.

Im really happy England won but im not one for patriotic idiots Sorry for that Monte Fair comment TTL. Complete neocolonial jingoistic claptrap. On the other hand though COME ON ENGLAND. I think the world of sport allows us to express national rivalries without bloodshed which is a pressure release valve as valuable as any negotiations around tables in the upper echelons of power. It's why things like the Olympic games and the World Cup bring nations together far more effectively than the UN or any other toothless organisations. I do believe there is a distinction to be made between patriotism and nationalism. The former being an expression of pride in your nations traditions and achievements and the latter which seeks to denigrate the ''other'' in order to promote missing self esteem. So to the accusation of patriotic idiot mia culpa but nationalist...never.

I heard something about FIFA fiddling attendance figures earlier. I cant remember the venues in question but apparently FIFA said one stadium had an attendance of 46,000 for the opening match, yet on closer inspection the stadium has a max attendance of 40,000 and many seats were empty. Same detail for a second stadium.
It was also mentioned that during the 2014 world cup in Brazil FIFA insisted that beer was sold in stadiums, which was against the law in Brazil. At the time FIFA said...
..."football fans must be able to drink beer at World Cup venues" and "the right to sell beer is an integral part of the World Cup experience".
Of course, what's missing from the above quote, is "depending on the size of the bung".

People tend to cheer for the underdogs even if the underdogs represent a system which you thoroughly disagree with.
