People tend to cheer for the underdogs even if the underdogs represent a system which you thoroughly disagree with. I think that's a British trait. It doesn't seem to be an American one as they often prefer to cheer for winners over losers most of the time.

Australia get the opener against France after just 8 mins. Up the Empire and down with the old enemy.

Saudi Arabia's king has announced a public holiday tomorrow after their historic win against Argentina. Makes a nice change from a public execution.

I don't see much sign of cutting back on the executions because they won a footy match.
Aside from such heinous capital crimes as adultery and homosexuality, it also seems to be a pretty inopportune time to get accused of "witchcraft"..

Aside from such heinous capital crimes as adultery and homosexuality, it also seems to be a pretty inopportune time to get accused of "witchcraft".. The winning Saudi goal was certainly magic. The striker brought down a high clearance with a deft touch, twisted around 3 defenders and curled a beautiful shot around the keeper into the top right corner of the net. He then followed up with a perfectly executed handspring as a celebration. If that wasn't witchcraft I don't know what is...

Think france are the only team England got to worry about from what I seen so far.
Germany looks like they could be taking a early exit again like they did in Russia

After Germany and Argentina's shock defeats I'm tempted to put some money on Serbia tomorrow. Let's see how Spain get on against Costa Rica next. Oh boy, this WC is really warming up now. Japan 2 Germany 1.

I have Costa Rica in a sweepstake. And there's a prize for worst team. On what I'm watching now I could be on a winner.

7-0 I hope Spain aren't in our half of the draw.

Don't get too excited about England's chances. Remember the last big tournament (UEFA cup IIRC). We got an easy group draw and got through to the knock out stages, but then got beaten by the first half-way decent team we played (Croatia?).
We've got another easy draw so we'll probably get through the group stage - but we'll get beaten by the first good team we play. England are what's called in cricket "flat track bullies". They can beat bad teams - and even look like they're a good team - but they fall apart when confronted by class opposition.

I think you might be misremembering the last World Cup where were got all the way to the semifinal before losing to Croatia. Finishing in 4th place over all. The UEFA cup is a club competition not a nations competition like the Euros. We got to the final of the Euros last time with an unbeaten record and the highest goal tally of the competition. After 120 mins of play in the final we were still unbeaten and only lost to Italy on penalties. This is the best run of results the England team has had in decades and our offence is amongst the best in the world as evidenced by our 6 goals against the top 20 ranked Iranian team. Our defence is also strong. We were the first team ever to reach the final of the Euros without conceding a goal. If you want to look for a weakness it is probably the lack of a world class midfielder to bring the ball forward.

People in the media are comparing Japan's win against Germany to Saudi Arabia's defeat of Argentina. Lets get some perspective here. Using FIFA's admittedly imperfect ranking system... There is a gap of 13 places between Germany (11th) and Japan (24th) The difference between Argentina (3rd) and Saudi Arabia (51st) is 48 places. There is no comparison.

Ronaldo up to his old tricks again. Going down in the box to the lightest of touches. Another soft penalty given. Roy Keene could be right that this is going to break all records for penalties awarded in a WC.
