I stopped watching much football with any interest since the start of the Premier league. The whole thing is a general farce where local teams effectively do not exist. Money is the driver of any team and fans are ripped off at every opportunity. This Qatari thing is just an extension of money speaking, hypocrisy, corruption and the usual vomit inducing antics. I only hope rugby does not go too far down the same lines. Football fans deserve better but until they stop allowing themselves to be taken advantage of then it will continue. Absolutely agree. British football, or topflight British football is full of foreign players, foreign managers and foreign money. In fact, it's foreign owned. The woke FA are just as big a disgrace as FIFA, football must be the most corrupt sport in the world. I mean Qatar? lol. And yet them who are attending the prem games are Increasing even thou they are foreign takeover isnt this a endorcement of the modern Game

The BBC have been very vocal about the abuse of minorities and the appalling conditions endured by the immigrant workers who died in their thousands building the stadiums. They have been very dismissive of FIFA president Gianni Infantino's call for the silencing of opposition to the Qatari authorities describing it as bizarre. They have hosted multiple radio phone ins of the subject and brought up the subject on Question Time. As have multiple other media outlets. Well in that case Monte, the BBC are bloody hypocrites aren't they. I mean, how many people have the BBC flown out to Qatar to promote the world cup? Too many, but several of them have vowed to use the platform to bring attention to the plight of workers, gays and other minorities in Qatar. Personally I believe that all the presenters could have stayed in this country to perform their jobs providing commentary on the championship which would have helped to avoid accusations of hypocrisy. The BBC are not providing the cameras for the matches and are just commenting on the feeds provided by FIFA (at a huge cost) to every other nation covering the WC.

As you say, we will have to wait and see but a quick look at Lineker's Twitter account seems to show he has been criticising FIFA's decision to grant Qatar the WC since at least 2014.

If that's what Lineker calls criticism, I have to assume he's led a very sheltered life. Couldn't get your link to work btw. Watched it via YouTube.

I won't be watching it. Qatar is a dictatorship. Going over to another country and getting pissed and pushing LGBT will just be portrayed as decadence in the Muslim world. It's an affront to enlightenment, and a shameless claim of western superiority. Something I am sure many would object to, as they do, if the situation was reversed.

If you could go to the World Cup in Qatar, would you go, considering the issues around human rights? I hate football, but lets suppose it was a performance of something I would like to see. If it were the case that it were in a stadium where it was pushing LGBT crap I'd probably boycott it. I'm on the other side of the fence and would strongly object to the politicisation of an enjoyment of mine. It happened once in my local town and the speaker was forced off stage by and irate audience.

Maybe after the world cup is over and they have no further use for them they will use the stadiums for public executions and you can go and watch them instead.

oh dont talk bollocks - no Qatari is going to get in a dinghy and turn up here.. Qatar is one of the richest countries on the planet. Fool. [/quote] I've known two refugees - both now in Nottingham - who fled their respective countries because they're gay. One from East Africa, the other from Saudi Arabia. (Although both - I believe - flew here.) It's more common than you might suspect as a legitimate reason to claim asylum.
