Same as everywhere else with fat people . Too much sugar , carbonated drinks ,fried food , white bread and processed food . Red meat may be a contributing factor but that's the case anywhere regardless of whether its meat with growth hormones or not . Americans do eat a lot of beef though a small % of them eat most of it . As Iv'e previously said beef raised with hormones produces leaner meat which is less fattening than beef without it which is a fact . And thats the only fact in the discussion , everything else is guesswork and assumption , possibility V probability and the probability is that eating hormone reared beef or non hormone reared beef makes no difference to human health I think your view is misguided, but I do understand you have copied it from the government and industry. Fat is caused by manufacturers skimping on the protein and padding the food out with excessive carbohydrates, and as you mention, sugar and processing. Well thats a fair enough argument but if we can get the prices down in the supermarket thats a good thing . We already see Irish beef 20% cheaper than British beef so why not US beef at a similar choice and some would say a better quality meat . By your argument we should ban Irish beef The Irish are not using a potentially dangerous unfair advantage. Which takes us back regulation of the meat market , its pro's and con's and whether N American beef is indeed dangerous .

Poly saturated fats are better for you than vegetable oil. Fat does not make you fat, despite the name and the naive intuition. These poor diets increase cancer risks as well. They are unnatural. Stone age man never ate bread. His diet was mainly meat with a bit of fruit.

Well we have to eat and with the Irish plans to cull cattle herds to meet carbon emission targets set by their EU mates we will have to get our meat from somewhere . Commonwealth countries we have trade agreements with countries that are not pandering to waste of time green directives would seem the answer . As mentioned the Irish have had the advantage for years , Canada /Australia having the same deal would have little impact on the home market

Not quite true, although hormone levels in beef are very low and unlikely to cause problems hormone treatments in dairy cattle were shown to cause high levels in milk and other dairy products and were consequently banned in many countries on health grounds.

The health and welfare of the cattle themselves is the biggest worry. As with foie gras what you end up with is obesity and all the subsequent problems associated with it.
