To the likes of srb7677, who claims that the EU Commission doesn't interfere in UK politics, this report seems to contradict that: linkThis is direct interference in our politics to try to get the UK to rejoin the EU. It couldn't get more blatant. But WTF has it got to do with an unelected nobody who, for reasons no one understands, is President of the EU Commission? The EU seems to be far too interested in UK politics for my liking - and I don't believe that their interest is confined to just making comments to stir up the Remainers. It would be naive to believe that they're not also paying remainers to overturn Brexit.

No, its not interfearence in British politics, its not interfearance of any kind what so ever, it is a leading European politician giving her opinion on the future of the United Kingdom. Its the kind of thing that forum members do on these boards every day, we are all entitled to our opinions.
Further more - Mrs Von der leyen is 100% correct, and I have always stuck by the claim that the UK will rejoin, at some point in the future.
The reasons been are blatantly obvious, because the vote was very heavily age biased, with younger age groups been majority in favour of REMAIN, and the over 50s been heavily in favour of LEAVE, and this has not changed, except to say that those who would now vote REMAIN are in the majority, seven and a half years after the referendum.
If the current trend continues, then the demands to revisit the question cannot be ignored, it will happen, its going to happen whether you like it or not. Its simply a matter of when, how far into the future.

The top EU figure said it was up to the next generation to “fix” the mistakes made by British politicians on Brexit in surprise remarks. Ms Von der Leyen also suggested the UK was on a clear “direction of travel” towards re-joining the bloc in future, amid growing frustration among voters with Brexit’s impact. Asked if Britain could ever rejoin, she told Politico: “I must say, I keep telling my children: ‘You have to fix it. We goofed it up, you have to fix it.’” Ms Von der Leyen added: “So I think here too, the direction of travel – my personal opinion – is clear.”

Its simply a matter of when, how far into the future. You sound very certain, cocky almost. The remain campaign was a little like that too. Face it, the remain camp had the perfect opportunity to make the case to remain in the EU while we were members. It failed dismally with a campaign lead by lies and fears. The EU is a different beast to the one we left becoming 'ever-more' centralised. Your case to rejoin is now monumentally harder. Whether you have the will to stake the case for giving up the pound and adopting the Euro, or the wit to explain why the UK should join an economically low growth bloc that hermorages money from state coffers, remains to be seen. The UK is quietly and effectively diverging where it believes it matters most to the UK economy, and will continue to do so. Now that the UK is out of the EU we're not expected to pay our part into their taxing and spending sprees: “Other countries have embarked on large tax and spending sprees to claim a share of the global market…the UK will not be drawn into a distortive subsidy battle” …. but will instead pursue an approach of “removing obstacles” to the private sector. Its the kind of thing that forum members do on these boards every day, we are all entitled to our opinions. It was a direct plea to the "next generation" to "fix the mistakes made by British politicians on Brexit" - rather than her simply giving her opinion on Britain's future. I would've thought that she had enough on her plate trying to deal with the moribund EU that is failing both economically, politically and socially. It might be amusing if she could tell us exactly what benefits there would be in our rejoining the EU. If she can even find one benefit she'll be doing well. But my point was that it's pretty obvious that the EU is working behind the scenes to try to drag the UK back into their quagmire. I just wonder who the traitors are in our camp. The EU would spend a LOT of money to get the UK back. It's not just that they need our budget contributions - it would be a massive coup for them for a member to leave the EU and then crawl back. The crowing would go on till the next millennium.

There is a failure here to understand what the future holds for the UK and the European Union
Analysts and those that study demographics, tell us that all evidence points to the present majority in favour of REJOIN / REMAIN is going to widen, we were told this after the referendum, and what was predicted then is all coming true.
Looking at the Referendum Result
Age group 18 - 24 ... LEAVE 25% REMAIN 75%
Age Group 65 - 74 ... LEAVE 66% REMAIN 34%
As the older generation dies off, and as the younger generation of 2016 takes over, the LEAVE camp is now the shrinking minority, the REJOIN / REMAIN group are today the majority, and growing.
The latest opinion poll was published on 27th November by Deltapoll with REJOIN leading by 12%, the last Opinion Poll to show a majority for STAY OUT / LEAVE was in April 2022, when STAY OUT led by just 2%, there have been over a hundred polls conducted since.
As stated previously, where a majority want something, you cannot ignore them forever, at some point the population will have to be listned to.

And as people get older they get wiser. It's why the remainers are younger and the leavers are older.

The longer we are out if the EU and the more deals we have with other entities then the more difficulties will arise when re joining . Younger people who want to re join the EU now might be put off by price of re joining in the future . The EU doesn’t seem to be going from strength to strength lately either . Ex remainers need to get a wriggle on if they really want their dreams to come true .

There is a failure here to understand what the future holds for the UK and the European Union Indeed ,there is . What exactly do you think will be the selling points of re-joining the EU is say 20 years time ? Without going full on with the detail do you think the people of the UK will go for joining a fully federalised Europe without veto and no opt outs ?

No growth, 14bn per annum for it and a currency built on the foundational strength of sand. Good luck selling that!

What exactly do you think will be the selling points of re-joining the EU is say 20 years time ? Without going full on with the detail do you think the people of the UK will go for joining a fully federalised Europe without veto and no opt outs ? In answer to your question ( as briefly as possible ) The first thing to point out is that a referendum next week would be from a starting point where most British people believe that leaving the EU was the wrong thing to do, and so the really hard work would have to come from those who think it was the right thing to do. The Changing World - is one reason why I believe a united Europe is the best option The economic, political and superpower landscape is changing rapidly, in a few years from now the world will be dominated by four economic superpowers, and China will be number 1, eventually India will be number 2, and the United States will be number 3, with the EU been the fourth. By grouping together, sticking together, co-operating and having the same aims, values and goals, has kept not only stability, but also the peace, as with NATO, proving that working together is the best option. If America goes Populist Republican, then NATO is at risk, and our ONLY option after that is with Europe, to fend off the economic and political might of China, Russia and others. Europe is without doubt our best insurance policy for future turbulance, whether that be Russia trying to steal more territory, or China attempting to force its economic aims. To secure our future prosperity, I want our country to be part of the European family, a free market of half a Billion people, with traditional Western ideas on freedom, the rule of law, a liberal society prepared to defend what many in Russia, Belarus and countries bordering the EU would like to have. The people of Ukraine are fighting for their future and their existence - THEM today, WHO tomorrow ? Lets be united, because it just makes sense.

Its simply a matter of when, how far into the future. Your post misses out the words fanatical and extremist which she is. And, which your post comes across as being. On morning of the day of the referendum I heard the results of a poll mentioned on BBC Radio 4 that morning, which put remain ten points ahead. You still lost by over a million votes.
The young don't have the life experience of the older voters and the hopeful inclusive 18 year olds of 1975 were the same people your lot consider to be the "racist old bigots" of 2016.
You're grasping at straws and floundering instead of looking to the future, you're stuck in the past. Only a very small minority of fringe extremists want to tear up our FTAs and go back in.
Besides, you weren't able to convince the country to stay in when it had a rebate, and opt outs from the Euro, from Schengen etc. We'd have to pay the full amount (not economically sensible), join Schengen and accept unlimited immigration from the EU, without border controls, and join the Euro too (fuck that).
Can't see us rejoining, ever. We'd be throwing away too much, and paying to become a vassal state.
Watch the "reform" of the EU closely, it'll become even worse.
