Before the referendum, I was one of those who argued that no longer being a part of Europe would inevitably lead to a scenario in which migrants wishing to reach Britain are going to be LEAVING Europe and, therefore, becoming someone else's (i.e - *our*) responsibility.
And Europe can hardly be expected to try too hard to stop them.
Don't say you weren't warned.

Whether we were in the EU or out of it the EU did nothing to stop the problem.

Like most Europhiles Walter, you confuse Europe with the EU. In this case, they're effectively one and the same. There's Europe/European Union - and we're an insignificant island off their coast and outside of their jurisdiction. If some people wish to pass through there and travel here, who are the EU to prevent that?

If some people wish to pass through there and travel here, who are the EU to prevent that? Whoa there, Great Britain has never ever been insignificant. Twice during the last century Great Britain rescued Europe from fascist tyranny. Prior to that great British hero's like Admiral Lord Nelson and the Duke of Wellington made Great Britain a global superpower, and today the UK is one of only five permanent members of the UN Security Council, which I suspect really pisses of the unelected EU. Insignificant indeed, left wing peasant.

Great Britain has never ever been insignificant.. We're insignificant NOW, so far as Europe is concerned. In the EU, we were a major player - outside, we're anything but.

There would be other options available that we have given up. (Still amused whenever I'm referred to as a "Lefty". That one never gets old..)

Nobody ends up a major player in the EU only a follower of Brussels rules. Except there's something to be said for being a part of the club that MAKES those rules.

Well perhaps in your mind Walter, obviously the majority felt overwhelmed by them and were told being part of a club they didn't like was what is good for them. Which of course is still going on.

You seem incapable of differentiating between Europe and the EU. The continent of Europe is a landmass formed c5 million years ago. The EU is an unremoveable political construct imposed 5 minutes ago. The two are not remotely similar. I like Europe, I travelled all over Europe, lived in Germany and Belgium for 11 years, my kids were born there. The EU on the other hand, I loathe with a burning passion.

Yes that is probably true, however being in a group that makes rules that generally work against one's best interests (and the Tories and Labour both agreed in 2015 that the EU was not working in Britain's best interests) seems at best idiotic.

BECAUSE THAT WAS WHY MILLIONS OF BRITS VOTED FOR BREXIT. Control your own borders. The EU does not help control your borders. It used to when you were a member but you voted to leave the community. JEEZUS Vinny. You couldnt be so thick. And it has been discussed before. It seems the EU is incapable of protecting its Southern border and all the borders in between the consequences of which are eventually visited upon the UK. Indeed the EU members do protect their borders. Their responsibilities are national, not obligatory via the EU.There are no EU rules which tell members how to handle their own immigration issues. However some have volunteered to find solutions together, including paying Turkey and running their own asylum processing rules. French authorities are obliged BY FRENCH LAW to process asylum applications within 6 months. Not by EU law. There are official asylum seekers' centres and if the application is rejected it is nigh impossible to appeal. It would be really useful to a conversation if you actually understood what is a sovereign decision and what is a collective optional decision and what is obligatory by EU law. It isnt possible to discuss issues if one side insists on arguing popular myths.
