Perhaps Hamas should have considered this before they attacked Israel. Perhaps Israel should consider international law and stop collectively punishing the whole of the Gaza strip for the crimes of Hamas. Also, (and this is not a perhaps but a definitely) Hamas should consider international law and stop trying to collectively punish the Israelis for the crimes of a minority. Hamas should recognise the right of Israel to exist and stop trying to destroy it. They should disarm. Stop trying to have war after war. And choose peaceful coexistence instead of terrorism. But, we know that's not going to happen. Hamas need putting down. But it's a question of how to do that, without harming the rest of the Palestinians (who are effectively hostages).

Well that's my point. Collective punishment is not the way. Apart from anything else it just recruits future terrorists. The child who loses his whole family to an Israeli bomb is more likely to grow up with a deep hatred of Israel. The cycle of violence must end because the alternative is one side or the other being wiped off the map. October 7th was horrendous but it was not the beginning of this struggle. Hamas can not be reasoned with but we have to hope that Israel can. We all know what Gandhi said about an eye for an eye.

oh dear - we are back to this obsession with Netanyahu.. yes, we all know he is a bad, bad, man - can we move on now? Why can you move on from your obsession they didn’t agree to the two state solution which is ancient history as you point out (when it suits) The Palestinians rejected a 2 state solution on several occasions, the first time being 1948. Having had several rejections the Israelis are now criticised for taking Palestinians at their word.. Cue ...more whittering on about Netanyahu..

Why not? - why have the Palestinian Government not invested?. They have. They have solar plants and back up generators but the IDF is destroying the infrastructure and denying them fuel. if the infrastructure is destroyed then it makes no odds whether Israel supplies water or fuel.

At what point do the actions of the elected Government become the responsibility of the people that elected them? If the Tory Government decided to bomb Paris would France be within its rights to bomb London even though they would kill people who were not part of the Government?

It matters to 2 million non combatant men women and children who don't have clean water to drink. Israel only provided 10% of Gaza's water before the siege, the rest came mostly from the desalination plants that now sit idle because there is no fuel to run the generators needed to run them. There are some small plants which use solar energy but they are to small and too few to cope. Water is a basic human right and Israel is actively denying it to the people of Gaza.

Elections stopped in 2006 in Gaza. At least 40% of the Palestinian population weren't even born then. Hamas are no more a democratically elected government than the Nazi party were by the beginning of WWII.

There is no law that mandates supplying water and fuel to your enemy in time of war.

Everyone knew what Hamas were before they were elected - voting for a islamic terrorist group is hardly likely to lead to a Westminster style democracy, yet that was the choice of the people.

There are a lot of wealthy people in this country and around the world still living off the proceeds of slavery.

There is no parallel with the war in Gaza and the IRA. Pack away the straw men.

There are a lot of wealthy people in this country and around the world still living off the proceeds of slavery. But everyone pays. It would be nice if those living off the inherited wealth of slavery decided to pat reparations but that is not going to happen. Our country and others benefited directly from slavery, so in theory we all benefitted.
