Given, they knew the buildings had a lifespan of 30 years makes my point even more pertinent, thank you. Given that this problem has been known for decades then your reply is a very poor get out clause to deny it’s the ongoing dereliction of duty by administrations of all colours to act knowing the problems associated with this. This further illustrates my point that we are governed by short term policies for example pfi where the problems emerge later. The desire to hang all this on Sunak (though I have little regard for him as a politician) is typical and why this country is turning in to a third rate banana republic The Tories have had 13 years to fix a problem that they knew was going to come up, they did nothing. If Labour had still in power and the same thing happened, I would say the same thing. You cannot 'excuse' the Tories for something Labour may or may not have done, that's just very, very poor.

Just build new buildings, use portacabins in the meantime. School buildings cost about £2k per square metre, so apart from the time factor to catch up, the cost is peanuts as a pproportion of GDP. We need to look after our kids a bit better as they were thrown to the wolves during Covid by the crazies at S.A.G.E. and the teachers unions who didn't want to go back to face to face teaching and made kids wear face coverings in school. Having rotting buildings is nothing compared to the psychological damage of the over-reaction to Covid.

Then you cannot read, why was it’s use stopped and if it’s life span deemed 30 years what was expected that it respectfully ask for retirement and pension perhaps a place in the HoL where so many of the useless and long past their sell by date reside. If this is aimed in my direction I detest Blair for the Iraq war,I also detested Thatcher for some things she did. That is all irrelevant and I’m not desperate about anything other than to point out we are and have been governed in this country by short term measures what they hope are crowd pleasers with no regard for the long term well being and security of this country. They (the Westminster elite) have taken to lying through their teeth to the electorate at every turn if you expect some miraculous change by Starmer taking power then you’re sadly mistaken. We are at a crossroads in this country where people are disillusioned by the political world as it stands and you only have to see the turnout figures downward trend to realise that or are you going to hold your head in your hands and say there’s been no real warnings if it goes tits up? There are alternatives out there and they may appeal for a while but long term worse than as it stands, for any hope for the western democracies and talking of here in this case Westminster needs a massive overhaul and in particular the lords,we cannot continue as we are. Finally and in relation to this you need to get it through your head that no matter how useless Sunak is the blame for this does not solely rest at his door,it like so many other of our problems lie with successive administrations of all colours.

You are wasting your time the Westminster party relies on them being dumb as a rock. The only way they can be stopped is people stop voting for their own downfall, which it might well be beyond that now anyway.

So we have had another 13 years of life out of these schools - sounds like a reasonable way to spend taxpayers money.

Oh I can certainly read, did you actually read that 1999 report? RAAC use was stopped after that 1999 report but that did not mean all buildings with it were in danger of imminent collapse. It said very much the opposite: 'Owners of both school and non-school buildings
that have pre - 1980 RAAC plank roofs should
arrange for these roofs to be inspected if this has
not been done since 1994, although generally the
deterioration of RAAC planks does not
jeopardise structural safety'
And as Pacifico's post shows some schools were identified as needing repair and it was the Tories not Blair that refused those repairs

Errr, that was 13 years ago and the Tories scrapped the Labour policy to renew them. That's 'deliberately scrapped' their plans, that's not incompetence it is criminal.

They are both as bad as each other

We are discussing structural problems arising out of faulty building materials which has only become apparent during the lifetime of THIS government ( a Conservative government ).
" July 2018 – A period of calm about the risk from Raac ended when the ceiling of the staff room at Singlewell primary school in Gravesend, Kent, collapsed on a Saturday evening having shown signs of structural stress the previous day. No one was hurt but the images of the destroyed room suggested people could have died. The school had been rebuilt in 1979 using Raac after a fire. "
To make matters worse, the school rebuilding / modernisation scheme funds were slashed under THIS government.
We have schools falling apart, local authorities going bankrupt, a serious housing shortage which this government has done F*** All about, an immigration service that has not been capable of doing its job, an NHS with serious staff shortages and staff continuing to get out.
I could go on and on - its time for this government to go

The problems with RAAC were known about decades before 2018. Lets be accurate about this Problems were known about RAAC for a long time before 2018, as in that RAAC was not a suitable building material, but it was not until 2018 that it was proven to be dangerous, in that it could give way, or cause buildings to colapse without warning. But worse ( for the government ) In 2021 the government released funds for the rebuilding of FOUR delapodated schools out of a planned 500 over ten years. I always believed that it would be the NHS which would see off the Tories, but in the end it looks like it will be a combination of crumbling public services, including schools falling apart and bankrupt councils and the NHS. From where I am sitting, this government has little chance of re-election THANK GOODNESS

Not only are these the most expensive buildings but will need either demolition or massive investments to keep the fucking things. A bargain not for the UK taxpayers.
