Penny Mordaunt (pictured) is backing a new National Service programme that automatically signs up every 16-year-old in Britain, it has emerged. The so-called Great British National Service, detailed in a new report by the think tank Onward, will have teens participate in a two-week civic exploration trip and complete a certain number of volunteering hours each year.

The proposed scheme aims to encourage teenagers from different backgrounds to mix and repair some of the damage caused by the coronavirus lockdowns, The Telegraph reported.
The so-called Great British National Service, detailed in a new report by the think tank Onward, will have teens participate in a two-week civic exploration trip and complete a specific number of volunteering hours each year.
Ms Mordaunt says she 'applauds' the scheme, which will tap into the 'goodwill and community spirit, energy and imagination' of Britain's youth, as well as promote 'good mental health and resilience'.
The programme, which could see as many as 600,000 teenagers participate, is not mandatory - but would require youths to opt out if they do not want to take part.

I can't see how it's any different to the National Citizenship Service - which is already running (and, I assume - based upon knowing a number of friends whose kids have done it - pretty successful). Unless Ms Mordaunt's idea is something more Old School, of course - rising at six, saluting the flag while singing God Save The King, and heading off on a 10k march before coming back to a bracing cold shower and a bowl of porridge.. |

Unless Ms Mordaunt's idea is something more Old School, of course - rising at six, saluting the flag while singing God Save The King, and heading off on a 10k march before coming back to a bracing cold shower and a bowl of porridge.. That would be a culture shock for the entitled youth of today. Nothing wrong with a bit of character building. School of hard knocks and all that. |

As the link says - that system is not working very well The Government should create a new Great British National Service for everybody aged 16. As many as 600,000 could participate by automatically enrolling young people unless they opt out. This system would ensure more people from all backgrounds signed up, avoiding the low take-up of the UK’s existing National Citizens Service, which only saw 13% of its target age group sign up in its best year despite a 45% target.
