Racist, not directly. Oppressive, yes. I'm all in favour of tolerance towards others where it's reasonable to do so. I don't believe in capital punishment, so I show no tolerance to that. Much as I hate the niqab, I don't want to see it banned, nor the state to dictate what I wear. Even if it prevents ridicule, taunting, bullying, making assumptions, bigotry and hatred? There woumd have been lives saved in the 30's and 40's if Jews had not worn kippahs. By the way the law applies only to outside the house. There is also, for your delight, a law which prevents uncovered beachwear to be worn off the beach area. ie not in restaurants. Just a warning if you ever find yourself on a French beach. It preserves a certain modesty and standard of decency. The only problem I had with a beach bar and attire in France was they thought it a little odd I wore socks when in shorts and wearing sandals,they said ah you are English and laughed and I replied oui inspector closeau and laughed back. |

The most ridiculous photograph I have ever seen was of armed police surrounding a woman on a beach in France because she was wearing the "wrong" kind of bathing costume.
The lady in question was wearing a "Burkini" a kind of full body swim suit
What kind of society are we if the state starts telling you what you can wear ?
