DC Thompson, Dundee-based publishers of the popular and long-running Beano have engaged the same sensitivity readers who performed the recent makeover of Roals Dahl’s books to ‘embed authenticity’ into its popular comic, which is soon to celebrate its 85th anniversary. “…After remaining largely unchanged for almost 70 years, the Bash Street Kids have been joined by five new pupils; Harsha, Mandi, Khadija, Mahira and Stevie Starr, in an attempt to better represent the demographics of modern Britain.”
And not just that…
“Fatty and Spotty, long-time students at the unruly school, were rebranded as Freddy and Scotty to stop youngsters with acne, freckles or weight problems being taunted by classmates.”
The original Bash Street Kids with their new classmates. DC Thompson ward off charges of ultra-wokeness with the claim that the Base Street Kids were ‘completely anachronistic’.
“There were ten kids. Nine were boys and one was a girl. All of them were white. The make-up of that class was OK in 1954 but it had to change.” Per the Times, the new intake includes Mandira Sharma, known as Mandi, a nervous girl whose anxieties are used to highlight mental health problems, and the hijab-wearing Khadija Raad, a talented artist. There is parity between male and female characters thanks to newcomers such as Rubi, a ginger-haired scientist who uses a wheelchair, and Jemima Jones, a junior ghost hunter who is black. www.thetimes.co.uk/article/the-beanos-transformed-itself-with-help-from-the-roald-dahl-sensitivity-readers-6smc7396q [paywall]

Nothing is sacred. If The Eagle was still going no doubt Dan and Digby would be in a relationship.

The kids will definitely be demanding that Bash Street becomes a ULEZ in the very near future, but for now they're busy designing their 'Just Stop Oil' posters I expect. Bash Street kids all donning cycling helmets before they ride their bikes, who would have thunk it ? For those who want to read by avoiding the pay wall: Beano Goes Woke

Gosh. It's the end of the world.
Comics adapting to reflecting the world their readers will recognise?
The horror..

Gosh. It's the end of the world. Comics adapting to reflecting the world their readers will recognise? The horror.. No Walter not the end of the world, just the end of common sense. If this went to a public vote you know as well as I that the vast majority of ordinary sensible people would vote to leave the Beano alone because they're sick of woke. This is just another case of virtue signalling from a left wing woke minority, but it wont last. Fads never do. And woke is a fad.

LOL funnily enough, we are talking about agendas today and advertising agencies cashing in on them.

Gosh. It's the end of the world. Comics adapting to reflecting the world their readers will recognise? The horror.. Next they'll have Alf Tupper eating kale before every race instead of good old fish and chips.

Gosh. It's the end of the world. Comics adapting to reflecting the world their readers will recognise? The horror.. The foundation principle behind The Beano was to, as best as possible, accurately reflect the world we live in. It's good news that The Beano has had an accuracy update. No doubt a fact checker has been hired to prevent future mistakes..

Gosh. It's the end of the world. Comics adapting to reflecting the world their readers will recognise? The horror.. A shame then that the sensitivity readers didn't feel obliged to embed additional authenticity into the comic by having one of the new pupils take on the role of a would-be Islamist masquerading as an unaccompanied asylum seeker, another a county-lines drug dealer and a third a feral knife-wielding inner-city dweller.
That's a world we'd all recognise instantly, not just Beano readers.

LOL funnily enough, we are talking about agendas today and advertising agencies cashing in on them. I can't see wanting to reflect the daily experience of one's readership as an "agenda".. Next they'll have Alf Tupper eating kale before every race instead of good old fish and chips. And retrofitting the bikes he works on at his garage as electric scooters. Funny - just last week we were talking in the pub about another comic book (either Hotspur or Victor) runner. Remember "Wilson"? A mysterious, barefoot fell runner who lived on the moors and trained on a diet of "broth, made with certain wild herbs".. (Whenever these threads appear, all I can ever see from the Usuals is "why can't everything be the same as it was when I was a kid?!")

Not really I thought it should have some depth rather than just skating on thin ice.

Good idea, first you change the facts then you create the new facts, which of course will need the fact checkers making sure you are producing said new facts.

Slim pickings for the outrage junkies today it seems.
Rather surprised to learn that Beano is still going tbh.
It’s a comic FFS. Who cares?
