www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-north-east-orkney-shetland-66066448Looks like the Orkneys are looking to get a divorce from the Scottish Poison Dwarf and her replacement Which is kinda ironic since they were part of a dowry security from a Norwegian Princess to a Scottish King. Can’t help thinking the Orkney Islanders are thinking ‘screw you mum was right about you all along’

At any rate, if it proves possible for Orkney to become a self-governing territory of a foreign power, it will open the door to Scottish independence wide open. I won't hold my breath.

Some people just don't want to see that. Especially john of gwent. John hasnt got over the irish 1916 rebellion and subsequent independence , never mind come to accept the end of the old unitary state in the late nineties or subsequent increase in support for independence and the break up of the old yookay.
We see many people on this site offer up hopes for the future and a return to some badly imagined rose tinted time of a blissfull uk state that never really existed.
Its like brexit. Many on here see brexit as the cause of all the uk evils. Brexit isnt the cause , its a symptom of the decline and splintering of the old british empire and unitary state that has been falling apart for a century now.
We really should start off a segment of this forum for all the old unionist hits that get trotted out time and again. Its like rinse and repeat day after day.

Not sure the brit nats have thought this through.
Berwick anyone?
Residents of the town of Berwick, on the English side of the border with Scotland, have reignited the debate on whether to return to Scotland after five centuries under English administration. Two separate polls show majority of Berwickers favouring reunification with Scotland
Berwickers are proud of their history, as shown by a research which found that 50% of the town consider themselves Berwickers, 25% English, and 25% Scottish.
But local newspaper The Berwick Advertiser decided to organise an online poll to ask their readers whether they would rather be governed by England or by Scotland. 78% of all those who voted said they backed reunification with Scotland.

I can't disagree with you. Scotland's independence seems to me a natural outcome, and I think that its inevitability is becoming more and more accepted. Some would argue that the union is already doomed if Scotland can only be kept without consent.

I agree that the illusion of an independent Scotland is being mooted daily by a very loud (and mainly uneducated) minority, however the majority of Scots ( those that voted in the referendum) are busy getting on with their lives, they are busy working, running business's and improving their lot and don't have time to waste on arguing the toss about independence. Don't mistake noise, biased polls and a supine media for actual electoral desire, as shown in the referendum, the majority of Scots have chosen to remain in the UK. It must be said that under the leadership of the current First Minister Scotland will remain in the United Kingdom for another 300 years.

If Orkney want to fuck off and join Norway that is a choice for them. If they are that unhappy with the status quo then I don't see why they shouldn't be offered Crown Dependency status like Jersey and Guernsey. They can then govern themselves within the umbrella of the United Kingdom.

They can then govern themselves within the umbrella of the United Kingdom. Why would the islanders want to be a part of the UK? The UK has shown its contempt for Scotland, including the Northern & Western Isles, ever since we were forced to go into Union. As far as I am aware the islanders accuse both Governments of centralising power. They want more local devolution. The SNP policy is to give the islands similar status to the Faroese relations with Denmark. What is Westminster offering? SFA! Orkney & Shetland have been part of Scotland for centuries. The inhabitants follow the Scottish education system, legal system, justice system, Health Service etc. The Church of Scotland has most adherents, certainly many more than the anglified episcopalian. Why on earth would they want to change all that?

I think we prove on here almost daily om , that you rarely if ever have a clue what you are talking about .
...that was in the EU , for example , and of course that is now no longer the case.
The referendum was 9 years ago , the scottish electorate has changed in that time , and the uk has sunk further into the mire.
Just as the british empire is no more , the original british state , which lasted a mere century is no more , so is this current incarnation about to come to an end.

Why on earth would they want to change all that? Scotland has been part of the UK for centuries - yet still some want to schlep off, which is fine. If Orkney are so unhappy with the governance they get from Edinburgh and London why should they not be allowed to decide their own future?

If you want to leave then leave - nobody is stopping you. Are you expecting mass ranks of Redcoats to march up the A1?
