Not nearly as much as the Empire owed them. 45 trillion pounds at the last count, I believe. Oh bugger where was it, I read something recently that gave a cash figure for the sum India owes Britain for... oh this is interesting not what I was looking for but interesting all the same; ... many empires other than the British have conquered India from elsewhere, such as the Ghorid Empire (from Ghor in Afghanistan; Mahmud of Ghazni invaded India 17 times, each time demolishing Hindu temples and carting away gold and jewels while the British, more archaeologically oriented, actually renovated long decaying temples) and Nader Shah of Persia in the 18th century. Calls for reparations here seem to be missing, even when the connection is made. For example, Iran and Iraq widely blame the Mongol conquests for destroying the irrigation systems that sustained them and their golden age, damage far exceeding European interference in those countries, but nobody seems to ask for reparations. Akhilesh Pillalamarri. (Journalist, writer, analyst, and law school graduate focusing on international relations, global security, geopolitics) The Indians were just on a lucky streak, Red. With Britain, they got the Fred West Empire model. It could have been worse. The Japanese would have offered them the Harold Shipman model. Rule Britannia!

I watched a programme a while back about a mountain railway in Shimla in northern India. 150 years ago the British made it a holiday destination and today it's still a popular holiday destination. It's in the foothills of the Himalayas, the people who work on that railway are proud of their railway and spoke fondly of the British. The systems in place were all instituted by the British, the way the railway was run and the infrastructure was all British. And the people who worked on that railway, with old British rolling stock, had nothing but praise for the British. Maybe it's just a one off, maybe the rest of India hate the British...

Mmmm, interesting point that was hotly discussed in the local a few months ago. I seem to remember the conclusion of the jury was female referees are OK, as long as they're babes with big tits. It's good to hear your local is replete with intellects of your equal Red. It isn't, most of them aren't nearly as sharp as me.

Stop talking as if it was the work of 'the British'. It wasn't. The same people who were screwing ordinary Brits over were doing the same to the Indians. When Moggy tells you to be proud of the Empire, he really means be proud of the fact that your ancestors lived in slums, worked 15 hour days, and were hanged for minor offenses, just so that my ancestors could make a fortune. You're just a natural cap-doffer, Red.

You're just a natural cap-doffer, Red. You come across as a bitter and twisted lefty, but worse than that, an ignorant bitter and twisted lefty. You hate the fact that people in Shimla are proud of their association with Great Britain, as are many Indians. The Bengal Club in Kolkatta was founded by the British in 1827, today it is considered to be one of the premium clubs in the world. The Indians haven't changed a thing. Like so many things in India today, it's still run the same as it was during the days of ther Raj.

It would mean so much more, though, if you hadn't said it to at least 5 people a day, every day for the last 10 years.
