My take is that he believes he'll be the next PM, so has retracted now rather than later. If he maintained his bullshit he would be challenged about during the campaign where he'd end up totally slated. Free tuition would cost an absolute forture under the current university business model. They have free tuition in Scotland, at everyone else's expense, because they only make up a fraction of the British population, but to apply it UK wide just wouldn't work unless the number of people going into higher education was drastically reduced. University in England is basically a service and source of income now, and even if he only made it free for British people he'd be called racist. Obviously, it's OK for Scotland to deny the people in England, because of double standards.
Yes they have free tuition in Scotland which meant that while we were in the EU, EVERY bloody foreigner rocking up to Scitland from the EU27 was entitled to free tuition in Scotland, UNLESS you rocked up there from England, in which case a law passed specially for the purpose meant that this did not apply. THATS how much the bitch hated the english and i understand that the police ate looking into not only hie she ‘lost’ £600k of referendum crowdfunding but she also ‘lost’ £400k of bequests from wills. And now they’re pretending they will come to ‘some arrangement’ to not forfeit 1.2 MILLION of public money by reason of having no accounts. If it were any other organisation the Money Laundering Regulatory Office would freeze their bloody accounts and leave then to starve until they satisfied the vourt they weren’t a bunch of crooks Absolute rubbish john. Eu law meant scotland could not discriminate against eu member states, but english welsh and northern irish students were charged as though they were classed as being part of the same eu member state , scots education was internally different and seperate from eng/wal/and n.i because of the acts of union.
So english student weren not discriminated against , and today , even though scotland has been dragged out of the eu , that same law about scottish education being seperate from england wales and northern ireland continues. All non scots are charged at scottish university.

It looks like the ScotNat is hurling abuse because he has no argument, but I guess this is to be expected from somebody whose entire campaign is a load of bollocks. you were going to prove that you and everyone else pays for scotlands free tuition fees? Or shall we take that as another empty statement from you b4?

As we know, New Labour ran a militant anti-English campaign whilst balkanising the Union. The bullshit they pushed when doing so was that it would strengthen the Union just before Gordon Brown kept insisting that Britain is broken (his and Blair's achievement). I don't think people fully appreciate the level of betrayal, treason and corruption that existed in that party, which was coined the Scottish Raj. Something that was obviously passed on to the SNP crooks. I have no idea what the Conservative party represents anymore. Like you say there's plenty that could be done.

sheepy >> I guess Sidney, the Westminster party have been telling lies for votes again, now you have to cover for them, its OK the public are as dim as they come, they won't notice. ----------------------------------------------------------How do you conclude that Keir Starmer has been telling lies for votes ? Keir Starmer has not gone into any general election with such a pledge, and he has declared that there will be a change in policy just days BEFORE local elections, so we shall see ... wont we.

Seriously cannot see what the issue is Will the Tory manifesto for next years general election be different from the last one ? Will some previous commitments be not included, will there be new commitments ? What was it exactly that the opposition leader actually said ? THE INTERVIEW WENT LIKE THIS (Question) Was this yet another promise that had bitten the dust? (Keir Starmer) tuition fees were obviously unfair, but we would now be looking for a way of funding students that was more fair but which didn’t involve abolishing tuition fees. The point is that the General Election Manifesto of both major parties are not known, and they will not be published until next year. Manifestos are fables for followers of the two party system, Sid. It makes them feel good about themselves when they go to vote. As no party follows them when they get into power, they are clearly not worth the paper Internet space they are written upon.

The answer is obvious.
Keep tuition fees but the repayment only kicks in once you are a higher tax payer (ie same as 40% bracket). Maybe drop the rate to 5% too.
This way Labour can spin it as you only start paying back once you are doing well...
This is clearly better than the Tory policy in which they are going to drop the point you start paying it from £27k to £22k!!

If you worked similar to the US parents are responsible for the quality of education their offspring receives, we pay towards NI and other taxes, maybe parents should take on a bit of responsibility instead of leaving it to the tax payers, or the responsibility of the children, we have all sorts of funeral plans, and critical illness plans, house insurance, car insurance, but one of the most precious possessions in your life is your 'children'.
I don't expect the tax payers to pick up the tab for my children's education, we pay for that, and rightly so, we have to be accountable for our own children and not burden that responsibility on tax payers, so why aren't the government setting up education plans, and starting from the day of birth.

The problem with that is that your opportunities are then decided by your parents... and you cannot pick your parents. Personally, I think one of the main goals of government should be to provide people with enough opportunity to have a good life.

I agree dave, but those same parents probably have mobile phones, internet, Sky tv, drive cars, we think the NHS is free, but it isn't, the NHS is not free it's paid for and funded by every working person in the UK via NI contributions. Education should work on the same principle, we should have a ET (Education Tax), ok people would argue why should I pay a ET tax and I don't even have kids, but the same argument could be used for NI, why should I pay to fund the NHS when I don't even use it, I am private.
It's become a political dinosaur, none of the main stream parties, be it from any part of the UK can solve the education conundrum, Lib-dems backtracked on their pledge for free tuition fees, now Labour have done the same, they realise it's a promise they can't keep, and to make it will be their downfall. It finished off the Lib-dems when Clegg not only promised free tuition fees if they won the general election, but when he formed a coalition with the Tories he voted with the Tories to 'RAISE' tuition fees, it was the final nail in the coffin for the Lib-dems, and they've never recovered from their utter 'Lies'.
