God I hope not, and not just for the people of Ulster. Extremists seem to be intent on opening old wounds. This is how it started in the 1960's but in those days we had 200,000 troops and over the years we learned how to do it, today we have about 50,000 and I belive some of them are actually fit for active service, as long as they're not shouted at, that would be bullying. I'd love to know what NI training would consist of today. Would Tin City have gender free targets? Would it be OK to say, shoot the bitch (Because she was stuffing an AK47 into a pram) Christ when I think back, I seriously doubt todays pampered youth could do it. But it may kick off again, and I'm fairly sure the EU would be less than disappointed.

Was that going on in your day, Red? Were these the supermen soldiers of old?

I think British Infantry is still amongst the best in the world. If they needed to go to Ireland I'm sure they would get the hang of oppression pretty fast. They've still got all the notes from the last time.

Let the Taigs and Proddies get on with it and then when they decide to blow up a school or some such, Montegriffo can pop over, give them all a group hug and explain that they should not feel guilty because it is all the fault of British Imperialism

Seconded but we shouldn't be complacent. IMHO it wouldn't matter if we had 300,000 troops as once you have visceral internecine hate they might quell point instances of violence but they'd be hated and shot at by both sides while the underlying tensions got worse. Just look at Somalia for another example of how troops on the ground can't fix things.

Was that going on in your day, Red? Were these the supermen soldiers of old? There were those offered that route or wanted to turn their lives around. Supermen? No but I know one or two who I’ve disagreed with (not on this forum) on a good few occasions but have the greatest respect for by what they did, sometimes endured and the people they are now.

There were those offered that route or wanted to turn their lives around. Do you know when it ended? I’m afraid not,I’m only relating what those who went through that process told me. Im not the military type couldn’t hack it too much questioning authority.

Lets face it and be brutally honest here , the westmisnter government are looking for a face saving way of quietly deposing of northern ireland. A province that is slowly but surely going nationalist and obviously is pro european , the writing is on the wall for the end of the current uk as it stands.
Circa £12 billion per annum to keep somewhere that doesnt want to be part of the uk , costs more than the old EU membership bill , and now has an effective border down the irish sea between it and the rest of the uk , plus the fact the majority in the rUK couldnt care less about the place according to polls over many years , what exactly would be the point in sending troops over there?
I would imagine if violence god forbid did kick off , and a few geriatric and disgruntled orangemen got the hump , its more likely an international peace keeping force rather than the depleted british army would possibly be sent there.
Being deadly serious , i think behind the scenes , rishi would ask washington what he should do in that scenario.

Borkie knows that monte. His old dear was irish , but its just his usual way of flippantly dismissing the troubles of the disunited kingdom.....this time in the 6 county pro european province.
Borkie feels a wee bit guilty because of the amount of time money effort and manpower londoners have sent to ireland to throw off the yoke of british imperialism. His fellow londoner John stephenson from leytonstone famously went over to ireland , learnt the gaidhlig , and became head of the RA.
So three cheers for borkie and his fellow londoners for all the help given to ireland in the struggles.

You are dreaming - nobody is going to put their troops into a sectarian spat in NI when they dont have to. i can just see the EU flapping around trying to find a gazillion excuses not to send any of their guys to a region that will become part of the EU if it separates. Eire cannot afford reunification unless the EU chip in and if violence kicks off who in the EU is going to stop it?.

They've still got all the notes from the last time. All the experience, the training areas and infrastructure, it's all gone. It will take at least ten years to get todays infantry to the same level of FIBUA competence as they were in the 1980's/1990's.
