Oh and whilst the EU were doing this: The bastard was also poisoning refugees in the West. High time the EU did more to make amends. Money and power is everything to these people, they care not a jot for us. So true. All the morals of a rapist.

Germany has made a SIGNIFICANT contribution to Ukraine's war effort, not only by been one of the first countries to offer Leopard II Tanks ( the model of tank that Ukraine specifically requested ), but also by giving permission to 15 other countries who have the Tank, to donate them to Ukraine if they so wish, and some have done. Germany has also sent Air Defence Systems, including the Iris-T, which can destroy an incoming missile at an altitude of 20km. The EU as an entity, and as individual donating nations have sent more than double the amount of military hardware to Ukraine than the UK has, but this is not a competition, we are all working together for a just cause. Come on Sid - you are going to have to do better than that. Germany had to be dragged kicking and screaming into supporting Ukraine. When the invasion kicked off and the UK was sending desperately needed anti-tank weapons Germany reluctantly offered to send 5000 hats!

Politico..just why do you think Germany should send military equipment to Ukraine when it gets energy from Russia, when it has a tiny military presence, and Ukraine has nothing to do with Germany.
Helping Ukraine is not a given even if the west thinks it is. There is no legal imperative to do so and if nations stopped jumping feet first into wars, history might have been less brutal.

He does raise an interesting issue - what is the point of the EU if it has nothing to say about the war in Europe. The EU aspires to great things and yet when thousands are dying on their doorstep they leave it up to the Yanks to lead the way.. The EU and its adherents ever claim the EU was formed tio prevent war in Europe; another significant failure. That was an objective of the founders of the 1951 European Coal and Steel Community after WWII, and it's been achieved by the original six and the members of its successive incarnations. The same is true of Nato.
Doesn't the current war underline the fact that membership of a trading bloc has kept members from armed fights among themselves, while the outside world is unstable...?

On your second second point, they have a war on their doorstep where they've blundered into a complex melting polt like the Ukraine to and try and woo them into their regulatory orbit, no doubt at all (as with NATO), their presence of presiding over Ukraine has irked Russia. With this in mind, the technocrats have had a hand in bringing war back to Europe. On the other side of its border it had been funding Libyan militias as part of an attempt to deflect migrants from its borders. On your first point, if Europeans couldn't learn their lesson from WWII and live peacefully side by side without having that sorry excuse for a peace and stability pact called the EU, then they don't deserved the land their nations rest upon.

Its a competition based on slagging off the EU to some posters, but this is childish.
The EU is united and "on side", with the rest of NATO and the democratic world, and when it comes to a combination of military aid + financial aid, Germany is way out in front of the UK.
For every Leopard II Tank that Germany and its partners are sending, lets be greatful, for every Challenger Tank that the UK is sending, lets be greatful, and for every American Abrahams Tank.
Lets be greatful of the MIG Fighter jets that Poland and Slovakia are going to send, lets be greatful that NATO and the EU and others are doing the right thing.

EU members that don’t consider support for one side or another during armed conflict in contradiction of their neutrality are idealistically and materially supporting efforts to help Ukraine. In fact, the EU Parliament has voted through an $18bn aid package for 2023…

Nobody said it was a competition, but everyone knows who dragged their heels for weeks debating whether the Leopard II was an offensive or a defensive weapon, AFTER we had already committed to sending Challenger II's. The Germans and the French were quite reluctant to provide aid and quite reluctant to divest from Russian gas. The Poles and Slovaks know that if Ukraine were to fall, they'd be next to be invaded.
