The EU could have marched ahead and formed their own armed forces after Brexit in 2016.
They didn't, they were happy to rely on NATO largely as it was cheap.
Of course once the US set its sights on 'liberating' Ukraine from the Russian sphere they were forced to support this yet reluctantly.
Germany is the largest economy in the EU yet their history in the last century is one of near destruction and humiliation so they will not be rushing to fight a military super power on their doorstep.
France is too far away from Russia to feel threatened as is Spain.

Even after the Ukraine war Sweden has little interest, Denmark even less.

And since the UK didnt properly leave the EU until 2020, by which time Covid demanded a bit of attention, the idea wasnt top of the agenda.

What happens to NATO if a right wing populist becomes President of the United States
We already know there s a section of the Republican Party who are at least "indifferent" to NATO, and want to let Ukraine be thrown to the dogs (Russia).
Should this not be a Wake Up Call for Europe
Our back yard is not Americas back yard, we share the same threats as Europe, and Europe is our continent, which we should be helping to protect.
But instead we seem more interested in AUKUS, some scheme to defend the Pacific region on the other side of the world.

AUKUS is a vital defence response to the developing threat of Chinese expansionism.

No because it wasn't just the UK that had no interest in that idea The EU already has Battlegroups which Sweden are part of. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EU_BattlegroupThe idea of an EU rapid reaction force was first discussed between Tony Blair and Jaqcues Chirac at a St Malo summit in 1998. news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/2726111.stm

What happens to NATO if a right wing populist becomes President of the United States Did you sleep through 2016 to 2020? What I am refering to is the numbers of prominent Republicans including Trump who are opposed to arming Ukraine, the main reason been ( according to them ) the dangers of been sucked into a war with Russia. Also, they see no huge value to the United States of NATO, these well known figures include Florida governor Ron DeSantis, Marjorie Taylor-Greene, Matt Gaetz and approximately 90 known Senators and Governors, mostly on the populist / Trump wing of the party. KInd of reminds me of the cheering crowds when Chamberlin arrived back from Berlin declaring "peace in our time", in other words appeasers, those that would sacrifice a moral stand so that our blood is not spilt, but it doesnt matter about other peoples blood.

Trump is no longer in office. Hopefully by the next USA elections the Ukraine war will be over.
Everyone sees the worth of NATO now. Even if it were ever without USA involvement, Western Europe all want to be in it.

Even should the US pull out NATO or something like it will survive, you don't need to be in the EU to want security.

You can swap republicans for France and Germany who were reluctant to support Ukraine because they deemed it more necessary to appease Putin.
