om15 ... "Absolutely, of course he has. The BBC also have the right to decide not to employ him. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The BBC have no right to sack anyone because they have personal opinions - UNLESS aired on the BBC Also, if the Tory run BBC do in fact sack Linekar, he will be snapped up by another broadcaster and get more money, and the BBCs reputation will be damaged beyond repair. But wait ... I guarantee that the Tory boss of the BBC will back down The BBC do not employ him He is a freelance contractor The BBC are free to terminate his contract to supply his services aa a pundit at any time. He has no employment rights. That was his choice. If the BBC feel his behaviour in any way brings their spending of taxpayers money on him into disrepute (and i use the term taxpayers money advisedly, for as gordon brown became incandescent about, the EU decided to categorise the licence fee as a tax) then they must act to sever the relationship.

The BBC have inadvertently made a martyr out of Lineker, and the virtual signalling backlash of "solidarity" alongside the multimillion pound TV presenter shows how divided this nation is. It also demonstrates the groupthink mentality amongst
BBC employees, where anti-Tory sentiment, anti-Brexit, anti-working class, pro-chattering class reside. The well-paid chattering classes within the BBC don't mind having their own virtue signalling opinions projected through the BBC. Yet, they
don't agree with the BBC when it actually tries to be impartial. Another case in point was when Emily Maitlis departed the BBC, she begrudged the BBC invoking its impartiality rules onto her when she savaged Domminc Cummings.
However, it is amusing to read and hear elements of the Leftwaffe complain about "freedom-of-speech" where Lineker is concerned. When in recent history they've been the main culprits and antagonists of curtailing "free-speech". They invented
'cancel-culture', 'de-platforming' and 'safe-spaces' for alleged "marginalised" groups, because words hurt them. They are the first subset of humans to hurt so badly over words, and the expression of language that they devised a systemic
countermeasure to sack, humiliate, cancel, retrain and re-educate people for their hurt feelings. Morally, these people are given a taste of their own medicine and the hypocrisy displayed is quite outstanding IMHO. Whether or not the BBC has a
contract with Lineker about his partisan views, these incidentally are not his first controversial comments while working for the BBC, I don't know. It's the moral issue here and the selective hypocrisy of the left and the luvvies who have come
dashing out the woodwork voicing their ire in support of Lineker and his 'free-speech' that gets me.
I am a believer in free-speech. Always have been. However, nobody on the Left defends the likes of J.K.Rowling; Kellie-Jay Keen (feminist who is considered far-right); Jordan Peterson, blasphemous teens in Wakefield, or even Nigel Farage's right
to 'free-speech'. When said folk announce their political views in public they often receive an onslaught of threats and vile abuse, calling for this or that to happen to them. There is no even handedness amongst the Leftwaffe, and I find it difficult
to stand by their side and denounce the BBC when they are more than happy to curb the freedom of speech towards people who's views they oppose, or turn the other cheek in other matters. I will not be the leg for them to stand on.

Free speech? No such thing .
The ability to speak freely is so often dependent (like so many other things) on how much money you’ve got,Lineker has the option to put two fingers up to those that oppose him and think nothing of it, many others and often to their cost cannot.

It is true that as a freelance commentator, if Lineker went somewhere else , the BBC would lose far more than he would.
There has to be a clear division between a place of work and the private life of employees.
The BBC has closed its eyes to more than a few incidents which indicate it is not impartial. I also get annoyed when politicians being interviewed are clearly telling lies and interviewers never press them to explain themselves. The whole policy should be overhauled.

jonksy ... "But no one would give a fuck about your bleating as it would at best be heard by a couple of hundred people where linekers bleatings are heard by 10's of thousands" -------------------------------------------------- Ah I see where you are coming from now, you mean anyone well known or famous should not have opinions, or if they do they should just keep them to themselves. There is a time and a place for everything. He signed a contract with the beeb and has abused the contract. This isn't about the loss of free speech but a lack of integrity on linekers part. He is a typical hypocirtical, sanctimonious lefty and thinks only his and his ilks views count.
