Any reason why people who are still working and earning after retirement age should not pay National Insurance? Giving them free travel seems wrong too… Apart from fucking up people's decades long retirement plans and encouraging people to give up work entirely and then losing income tax... nothing at all. If you wanted to do that you would have to scrap NI and replace it with pension fund, unemployment insurance, elderly care and healthcare. That way once retirement age is reached you can knock off pension and unemployment, but keep elderly care and healthcare.

Polly Toynbee in todays Guardian calling for an end to the Universal State Pension - wise move or will it just encourage more people to sponge off the State? There’s a reason why in a world where increasingly all you see is headlines and paywalls, the Guardian still allows anyone to read it If you had to buy it, who would ??

I sometimes hear pensioners down the pub saying "I cant get any help because I saved all my life"
Too bloody true you cant get any help
The Welfare State is a "Safety Net" designed originally to stop people from falling into destitution and abject poverty.
Its not a means to preserve peoples assets ( property ) or money ( savings ), why the f should it be ?
In Britain today there are hundreds of thousands of pensioners with thousands of pounds stuffed in mattresses, or have off-loaded large sums of money to relatives, in order to stay below the cut-off line of £15,0000, thereby enabling them to get maximum benefits from the state.
The largest number of "Scroungers" in society today are not young families or single mothers, they are pensioners.

To be fair, if it were not for the promise of the occasional bung, we would probably never see the grandchildren

The Tories under Thatcher took away the prospect of council houses from the last generation and the lefties want to takeaway universal state pensions from the next . Lefties are no better than the people they say that they hate ,

Expecting ever more taxpayer funded freebies to be lavished upon you whilst voting against the interests of the struggling hard working sods who are paying for it all. Ever more for you and ever less for working people. Some of you are just malicious, self interested, greedy old bastards. And you are one of them

The largest number of "Scroungers" in society today are not young families or single mothers, they are pensioners. Well said. And in response to your first sentence, I can well remember overhearing one pensioner in my locale moaning to his mate about how he had to choose between eating and heating. That was shortly after I was stood behind him in a shop where I saw him spend £30 on lottery tickets and scratch cards!!! I thought to myself that that 30 quid could have paid for a fair bit of food or energy. And they think working age people have a sense of entitlement. This is of course only one individual. But there is no such thing as a poverty stricken pensioner anymore unless that person is either not claiming what they are entitled to or are mismanaging their finances. My own dear mum is a poorer pensioner who worked all her life, yet she has never been as well off as she is in retirement. She is far from rich but can easily afford to live in modest comfort, which was rarely the case when she worked. We have created a society where the only fail safe route out of poverty is to reach retirement age, and become part of a molly coddled age group which is already on average better off than the working population supporting them, with on average much greater wealth and assets, and far lower financial outlays. And they pay less tax than the rest of us even if they are working, being exempt from National Insurance in spite of being by far the largest cost to the NHS. And they call those of us who state these facts "spiteful" and similar, whilst so many of them are forever calling for a shittier deal for working people. And they do it with apparently no sense of irony.

Says another ignoramus who knows fuck all. I work for a living and claim no benefits but pay my taxes to support your freebies. The only one of us getting anything from taxpayers is you, you selfish old git.

The Tories under Thatcher took away the prospect of council houses from the last generation and the lefties want to takeaway universal state pensions from the next . Lefties are no better than the people they say that they hate , Pensioners getting enough pension income to live comfortably will probably find the state pension is largely negated by income tax. I’ve got a couple of relatives in their seventies, who still enjoy doing paid work. They pay tax on all their income, but get free travel outside certain times and don’t pay National Insurance — nothing illegal, and a nice bit extra, but it seems unnecessary…

The deal was a universal pension ( taxable) after paying in for an agreed amount of years . Your self hatred has made you delusional .

You don't have to pay NI though, do you!
