LONG term impact ? Thatcher for her destruction of social housing
FACT: in 1981 the majority of blue collar workers were living in rented accomodation large swathes of which, particularly near industrial areas, had been built by snd maintained by council direct labour organisations. Rents were often legally controlled by rent tribunals and there was no such thing as housing benefit because a man who laboured forty to forty eight hours a week on a factory floor or a blast furnace brought home MORE than enough to feed clothe house and generally provide for himself his wife and his two point four kids.
Thatchers enforced sell off of the council housing stock COMBINED with her aggressive refusal to allow replenishment of any kind caused the problem we have today where nobody below the pay grade of a merchant banker fails to qualify for in work housing benefit, which is paid for by the fact no man or woman in work for what is today called full time employment can be paid less than several thousands of pounds more than the income tax threshold, and all such handouts eventually end up in the bank accounts of tory donors.

According to YouGov 44% of people think Thatcher was good for Britain, with 29% who think she was bad. It's certainly true to say she is probably our most divisive prime minister, there doesn't seem to be any middle ground with Thatcher, you hate her or you love her. At the time I was no fan of Thatcher but tbh being in the army I was largely shielded from the realities of her economic policies. I remember she was popular within the armed forces.

I think it is difficult to compare parties due to factors outside our control Oil Crisis, 197Os-mid 80s -Wages inflation strikes. Mid 80s Growth through deregulation like US banks opening in the UK. Easy credit stimulates house sector. Mid 90s getting closer to the EU encouraged foreign car manufacturers to open up manufacturing here. Britain crashes out of EU snake and traders make a fortune short-selling the £. 2000s - War on 'Terror' - costs and personal liberty restrictions. Mid 2000s - Japanese carry trade end, traders impacted. MBS comes to light and massive hit to financial system and national debt doubles from this time due to bail-outs. 2010s - Austerity, Irish bail-out after 2012 Euro crisis, 2020s - COV-ID Lockdowns - millions lose jobs, Ukraine war causes massive fuel increases and govt provides a £6bn subsidy. Heating oil prices rose by 300% some 5 or 6 months before Ukraine war. Gas bills rose a year after Russian invasion of Ukraine after Biden requested an embargo on Russian gas?

Nah - the council houses that were sold off still had people living in them. The cost of housing (both owned and rented) rising is simply due to not building enough of them. Housebuilding peaked in the late 60's and from then on, irrespective of what party was in Government, the number of new houses being built fell each year - and then in the mid 2000's we saw mass immigration take off which accentuated the housing shortage. Housing costs are where they are because of demand - people dont want more housbuilding and immigration but governments continue to allow mass immigration. Hence you will pay through the nose for a place to live.

Who do you think has had the most baleful long term negative impact upon the UK, its economy, its social structure and its society? Many have contributed towards us being the basket case that we are, but my vote goes to Thatcher who started the rot in so many ways. Blair by three fields and a dyke. Thatcher purely lives in the heads of Labourites rent free. If she did anything wrong, why hasn't any PM reversed it, they've had nearly 32 years to do so. So simply put, Labourites need to let go about Thatcher and move on. Blair with his illegal Iraq war, and PFI in the NHS. He simply mortgaged our children's future with the new hospitals. So the NHS is saddled with paying millions upon millions to rent the new hospitals, with ridiculous crap food contracts that they can't get out of. Then if you look at the manufacturing figures, manufacturing eroded to greater extent and quicker under his watch than anyone else. The UK went from being a well known engineering country to a one that's promotes wet flannels in film and media. Manufacturing declined 5% under Thatcher, 8% under Blair. Staunch Labourites promote Labour as the party for the people, how foolish can they be!! We're a nation where many are stupid enough to champion the junk from China and wanting to be part of the EU dictatorship for their goods instead of getting ourselves to the forefront of design and manufacturing.

Mrs Thatcher was the giant who took on Red Robbo and Scargel, her legacy was squandered by lesser Prime Ministers over the years. We need another Mrs T now. The politician that had the largest balls in the UK was ironically a woman, Thatcher. Damp squid from then on.

Surely Boris Johnson, should have been named in the list. Quite. To put in Jeremy Corbyn but omit Boris is somewhat bizarre. Jeremy Corbyn's only contribution is to lose two elections? Corbyn was an asset for the Tories, he made Labour unelectable.

Your post is foolishness personified.

Pretending to be clever by putting any old shit words together is further destruction of what little credibility you might have had.
