Is there any reason why this elderly woman didn't receive her portion of the many schemes the government has created in order to support energy costs and other instances of rising prices? The press are wonderful at finding sob story clickbait.
And to compare her "story" alongside migration is a choice. I would put it alongside the billions paid out to doubtful people cashing in on the Covid crisis as well as people in finance who make millions shorting the pound whom the press hardly ever mention.

The fact that the idea of an 89 year old , poor British citizen should be looked after rather better than migrants who turn up in boats is considered a subject of debate is a bit disheartening tbh.

It seems just a few days ago that Wally was regaling us about how his town "is a very nice place (as a community, we're currently providing homes for Syrian and Afghan refugees, after all)", not to mention being somewhere well up-to-quota with exotic barbers, so I thought he'd jump at the chance for yet more conspicuously competitive altruism.
When it comes to kudos with the luvvies, and potential lifetime Bafta awards for services to the industry, asylum seekers trump OAPs everytime.

No one doubted that. The concerns raised have been that this plumber might not be as altruistic as initially appears and she may have just gone and spent her money unwisely. And it's hard to see that her living in her own home is worse than having to doss down in a tent at Manston and then moved on in most cases to to a shabby B&B with bugger all to spend.

If we are going to take into consideration whether the person has spent their money wisely then what? Deem them feckless and stop supporting them? Do we do the same to the migrants who unwisely gave traffickers money and find themselves swimming in the channel?

No but we know the basic state pension is much more than the £40.85 allowance asylum seekers get so some thing does not fully add up with this story.

Yes. Apart from fully furnished and equipped centrally-heated accommodation, all utilities, council and other local taxes, property maintenance and periodic refurbishment(as detailed above), repairs on call, TV and license that's more or less it.

I'm not saying they should get more or better than a tent at Manston followed by a down market B&B but this whole 'better off than pensioners' line just doesn't ring true. A UK pensioner can't be on less than £182.60 a week if single, £278.70 if with a partner.

When it comes to kudos with the luvvies, and potential lifetime Bafta awards for services to the industry, asylum seekers trump OAPs everytime. Don't be ridiculous. No one "trumps" anyone. Yes. My town is very nice. The people here are very nice. Many here try to look out for anyone who needs a hand. Sure, we have a community group who happen to support refugees. Very successful they are, too. My own hobby "business", over the past 16+ years, has held fundraisers for (off the top of my head) Scouts/Guides, ****** Musical Theatre, Mencap, ******* Hospice, War Child, Men in Sheds, Breast Cancer, Hope Not Hate, ****** Lunch Club, Skateistan, ****** Youth Centre, ****** Refugee Welcome, British Legion, ****** Toy Library, ***** Women's Centre.. (It doesn't really "cost" a company to hold the occasional fundraiser, mind. Tax allowances can be very generous.) Around our town in general, in common with communities across the country, people raise money for WHATEVER needs it at the time. They aren't doing it to be "competitive" or anything even remotely like it.. "Nice people" help WHOEVER needs a leg up. They don't differentiate based upon where people may be "from". That's the kind of thing "bad people" do.

I don't mind telling you I was in tears as I read this story. It shouldn't happen to anyone let alone an 89 year old woman who lives on her own. How many times is this repeated up & down the country. It's an paymentsute disgrace, the government should be ashamed. metro.co.uk/2022/12/23/woman-left-eating-eggs-on-toast-and-1-67-in-her-bank-at-christmas-17987230/But this is the story that makes me so very angry - www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-63404485It's just not right. The government are spending £billions of our money on people who should not be in this country and have no right to be here, while people who have contributed all their lives are ignored. I think its disgracefull that this woman who received 185 per week in state pension cant afford a decent meal what is she doing getting drunk every night on the money . i bet she dosnt put the heating on despite reciveing £250 heating allowance and £25 cold weather payments .plus free peerks. Dont understand why there no one from the DWP not checking where the money goes.

Blimey! Wally's going for the Gold Star to his Virtue Signalling gong. Beatification next?
Still it's helpful to learn his true feelings about those of us who believe that our own folk are more deserving of our support than someone who just arrived in a dinghy yesterday. According to Wally's pocket moral compass any one who believes such a thing is a 'bad person' no matter what other charitable acts they perform.

You do realise that some pensioners are faced with the decision to eat or heat , don’t you ? I notice that you have been somewhat high handed when a particular mod friend has the same attitude about single mothers and people of working age drawing benefit . I suspect that you have some kind of bias against old people . Is it some kind of self hatred ( forensic question by the way ).
