It was the warning Ed Miliband didn’t want to hear. Days after the Energy Secretary pledged low-carbon power for all at Labour’s annual conference, energy giant EDF discussed plans to close four of the UK’s five remaining nuclear power stations. Two are currently scheduled to close in 2026, followed by another two in 2028. “They can’t go on forever,” said Rachael Glaeving, commercial director at EDF’s UK business. “Any life extension of these power stations is going to be measured in months.” The decision, announced after thorough engineering reviews, is set to make Miliband’s dream a lot harder. He has promised to deliver a net zero power grid by 2030, this is expected to mean 95% green energy – with the remainder coming from burning gas. Some fear the breakneck pace of change could stretch the grid to the limit. In September, the country’s last coal-fired power station, at Ratcliffe-on-Soar, Nottinghamshire, closed. As Britain’s reactor fleet shrivels, the amount of nuclear capacity will fall from six gigawatts (GW) today to just 1.2 GW by 2028 or soon after. Along with rising demand from power-hungry data centres and technologies of the future, it will make it even harder to keep the lights on when wind and solar generation is low. www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2024/10/13/why-age-of-energy-rationing-is-looming-for-britain/I wonder, when the power cuts start, who will Labour blame? The previous government, Thatcher perhaps?..

Bound to say it’s a problem inherited mind some of it is through the nut zero fanatics that infest Westminster No, you are wrong. This was not inherited. Milliband is absolutely mad for net zero.

Labour will blame it on the same thing they blame everything else on, the fictitious '£22 Billion Black Hole'
And a few power cuts would be a good thing - it might shake todays yoof out of their stupor and realise that there are costs involved in Net Zero and it's not all about saving cuddly Polar Bears.
A good lesson in life.

A good lesson in life. Broadly agree but they’re not under the illusion it’s all about polar bears they’ve had it rammed down their throats we are at fault because we started the Industrial Revolution so we owe the rest of the world compo for that and slavery. Point out that we make almost nothing anymore because it comes from China and elsewhere and they’re building coal fired power stations apace and the nut zero nutters reply it’s still our fault because we buy from them. We are being programmed to believe all the worlds problems past and present lie at our door and we are obliged to pay in both monetary terms and loss of any cultural identity.

Oh I don’t dispute that but the previous Tory administration bought in to the nut zero madness. I accept the Tories didn't exactly fight against it, much to their shame. But Labour are manic about it. It doesn't matter about the economy, it doesn't matter about pensioners keeping warm when it's cold, or even keeping the lights on. What's important for this government is showing the rest of world how virtuous they are. That's all that matters. Milliband's dream... ... yes, we have trashed the economy and as predicted thousands of pensioners are dying because they're cold. But net zero is so worth it. This excuse for a government are so inexperienced, so entitled, so incompetent, I honestly dread to think what a full five year term might bring.

The previous government, Thatcher perhaps?.. The old nuclear stations did not give out a great deal of energy compared to modern ones. I think Hinkley breaks some world record to do with the size fo the reactor, so one new one can replace many shitty ones. They eventually suffer from cracks in the concrete and become vulnerable to leaks, and it may well be because they are old and shagged that they don't run at full capacity. They were already extended past their designed life.
Besides all our infrastructure has been left to rot. It's not the exception. It is the rule. Water, leccy, underground, BR trains, roads.. What out of all the infrastructure we have is not fucked? Even the schools are falling down.

I don't disagree, the points you make reinforce my argument that energy policy in this country has for the past 20 to 30 years been, lets be generous and say less than competent. For the past 20 years, until Ukraine, the EU (Thanks to Schroder) were massively dependent on Russian gas and net zero has highlighted the fact that the west has taken it's eye off the ball, the east has not. Trust me, unless western politicians wake up, over the next 30 years there will be a transfer of power from west to east.

Trust me, unless western politicians wake up, over the next 30 years there will be a transfer of power from west to east. I think it is inevitable now. They kept it under wraps a bit so the Western beast would not be awoken while they figured it all out. There is absolutely no point in the UK trying to fight the East. I think they quite like us anyway. It's South Asia that is the shithole and the Middle East. I'm already planning as new business which will involve China. I guess I'll be getting to know then a bit better then.

I bet the arsehole is coughing up blood now trumpy has won. Good innit? The choice was shit or shit. Labour just dumped itself in the wrong pile of shit. Well actually there is never a right pile of shit to dump yourself into though. Silly people.
