God help those living in Labour's regions. They're shit now, just imagine them with more power...

God help those living in Labour's regions. They're shit now, just imagine them with more power... In any region, Local authorities are not representative of their constituents, winning candidates get some 12/13% of the vote.

Personally, I would have a mayor for every town. An elected person who you can hold to account at the ballot box every 4-5 years.
Local democracy is a joke, nobody cares, they are all faceless councilors who gain office on pathetically low turn outs.

Turnouts are low because candidates are hopeless and people know they can do fuckall by voting; local authorities are run by the backroom not by the councillors.

On a grand scale at times. I used to go to just about every meeting of my district council. Where I live now, I've been to one and another concerning a planned development. The latter of those I met a few district councillors, one of whom was leader. I let him know my thoughts on coulcillors and councils and that if I voted it was for an independent who I thought was worthy. In fact I did some canvassing for a couple of independents but only on the basis that if they were elected, they didn't join a group, something that not only other councillors think is preferable but the council servants prefer since they don't like loose canon councillors. The leader of the council I met and had been a councillor for years, didn't stand as a Tory come the next election but as an independent. If/when I ever meet him again I'll ask him for the reason.

Do you think that might be because of the lack of power your local authority has? I also think the idea of a mayor is a good one. Someone to get local things done but who is not hogtied to their political party.

I'm unclear what this Mayor could do that the local Council cannot - if he is just another layer of bureaucracy then not a good idea.

I would scrap councilors and replace them with a mayor who appoints professionals to run the council. I think we need less democracy and more accountability. ie you vote for your MP & mayor. I would also run the House of Lords like jury service. The last thing we need is more fucking elections that nobody votes in.

Starmer does not speak to the SNP. The SNP do not want to be in Westminster. So the 3 Britnat amigos, Starmer, Brown and Sarwar like you ranting Unicorns, Moonbeams and castles in the sky. Ah the new powers. Offering the abolition of the House of Lords. The policy of Labour for 112 years. Remember the Vow. The prospect of Home rule and increased security in the EU. Then FFA and I as a pensioner could sleep in the knowledge my pension would be secure. Then we have the one and only Scottish Labour tartan Tory working with the Tory's, to destroy the SNP. . So could you explain your pie in the sky. How the Tory apologist Starmer will offer the SNP an independent foreign policy on devolved matters. And oh. The Tory's have already wrecked the Dis-United Kingdom
