As promised: no VAT, national insurance, or income tax increases. Must be strange for the electorate to have to get used to a political party keeping its promises. Wonder if they’ll be sidetracked by the lies and misinformation that’s all the crazy Right have in their armour They’ve already snatched some benefits from pensioners and proposing cuts , yet spending on pet projects .It’s early days leftie. x.com/SaulStaniforth/status/1818161014799520155But still no broken promises…

Wonder if they’ll be sidetracked by the lies and misinformation that’s all the crazy Right have in their armoury… Those are the biggest tax levers by far, and we all know scrapping non-dom and charging VAT on school fees will raise peanuts, or may even end up costing money. Some people say it was a very dishonest manifesto, because there are going to be big tax changes without Labour having a mandate for them. An actual party of grown ups would have reversed the NI cuts straight away, especially since the social care ticking time bomb is about to explode. It really is depressing, different government, same reluctance to tell the truth about the scale of our problems and what it will take to fix them.

But still no broken promises… Well that is arguable. Labour were promising growth yet the first thing they do is scrap infrastructure investment in favour of above inflation pay rises for public sector workers - pay rises that didnt even have any productivity improvement requirements included. Odd way to achieve growth especially as they are now trailing that they will hit private investment with higher taxes.

Plans to scrap winter fuel payments to most pensioners have been met with dismay by some of those who will lose out. About 10 million older people will no longer qualify for the benefit, which is worth between £100 and £300, because they are deemed too wealthy. The new Labour government says it is right to target those most in need, given the "dire" public finances it has inherited. Rob Trewhella, 67, says his weekly pension is £2 a week too high to be able to claim pension credit. This means he will no longer receive fuel payments, making him feel "annoyed and angry". It's very sad when you get to this sort of age, when you've paid tax and National Insurance for 50 years, and you still have to scrimp and save - it doesn't seem right," he says. "I do not believe any words that come out of a politician's mouth any more." 'I'll miss winter fuel payments by £2 a week' www.bbc.com/news/articles/cv2gykdxvyvoYou’re right to be angry Rob but Labour says that you are wealthy so you can fuck right off .

But still no broken promises — however galling that must be… The problem for Labour is that they promised (or hinted) they would sort out x, y, z over the course of the last year or so to set a narrative. The fact they dumped 99% out of it from their manifesto so they can claim they kept their promises just won't wash with anybody except hardcore Labour supporters. Most people would not have read the manifesto, they would have based their vote on what they have heard and witnessed over the last 5 years. Labour have spent the last 5 years calling out the Tories over the cost of living crisis, where people have to choose to "eat or heat". Taking money away from millions of Pensioners is (1) vindictive (2) not mentioned in the manifesto. It's a disgrace for a "Socialist" party, and you can image all the stories we are going to see over the winter. You may think Starmer did well at the election, I don't. He was always going to win by default so why the stupid promises over income tax, NI & VAT. He has totally boxed himself in, and now he is going to have to resort to deeply divisive taxes / cuts, which will raise peanuts compared to massive tax levers of income tax, NI and VAT.

But still no broken promises — however galling that must be… And the biggest laugh of all is, if a Tory chancellor had just scrapped OAP's winter fuel payments, you would be at the vanguard of those shouting about nasty Tories killing pensioners. LOL it's a funny old game.
