By reducing the number of overseas students What? The people who pay huge amounts of money to come here and get no UK benefits. Surely he doesn't think that's what people meant when they said they wanted immigration cut. What a bunch of two bit shysters the Tory party have become. There are always two sides to everything, our youngest granddaughter started Uni a few weeks ago, three Uni's offered her a place she selected one which provided her with live on campus accommodation cheaper than renting a room for the duration. At the last minute the Uni withdrew the offer with no explanation she contacted the other two Uni's who stated sorry all places now gone, she luckily found another Uni that had a place open closer to London, which she is happy with living in a house let out to students but costing more than the accommodation she was originally offered by the Uni of her choice. She finally got a reply from the Uni she had been offered a place and accommodation; the reason was they preferred students from overseas as they are able and willing to pay more I am sure all will join me in congratulating your granddaughter on gaining a uni place and hoping she enjoys her time there. It feels like she has had a very unsettling experience. I had heard that a lot of universities were having accommodation problems as Covid had pushed a lot of private landlords out of the student market. I am aware of problems in particular at Edinburgh and Durham but I guess it probably also applies to others. Can I check whether the suggestion that she was denied a accommodation place due to prioritizing overseas students was actually confirmed by the university or whether that is an assumed reason. While I can see in a crisis they might prioritise people coming from more than say 50 miles away, I am surprised that say Durham would prioritise a student from say Mumbai over say Monmouth. I am even more surprised that even if they did, they would tell people. Seems like a PR disaster with no upside.

As regards immigration all parties have been lying for 60 years to my knowledge. Crossman lied about numbers to take the wind out of Powell's sails. The question is why have they been lying for 60 years. True enough, though I think many relied on the public being disinterested until Nigel Farage made it a Brexit issue. And those folks are my target. Those who's claims have gone from Brexit will stop immigration, to our government are now free to make the right decisions, to we can vote for a government that will stop immigration. What's the next claim? What government are they going to vote for now they must see that the Tories are liars, using them to win the election and cling to power. Get brexit done. Are you living in another dimension. Brexit was always about getting back control which we have, now all it means is that a government has to apply that control. These are steps in a process. We could hope it all happens at once but now we have to seek the party that will.

Still gabbling on about the mystical party that will carry out your will. was never going to happen, you were duped. As for your steps, more than half the country want to re-join the EU and its freedom of movement, seems the steps are going backwards. Certainly the party they voted for to get Brexit done never intended to do more than free up their banker mates from EU control. 6 years later and immigration is soaring, its actually quite comic.

I don't mind it not being a priority. I mind them lying all the time. As regards immigration all parties have been lying for 60 years to my knowledge. Crossman lied about numbers to take the wind out of Powell's sails. The question is why have they been lying for 60 years. Probably because all governments have lied since the Romans established the Saxon Shore to keep out Johnny Foreigner. It didn't work then and it won't work now, despite fantasies of the British being a nation of sturdy yeomanry living in thatched cottages in St Mary's Mead and all the rest of the Agatha Christie bollocks.
Britain is a rich country and as such has and always will attract immigrants. And the day it stops will be cause the nation has become dirt poor and then we will have something to really bitch about.

Most likely because 18% of the population is over 65 and we're not having kids.

However you say we were duped becasue it was Brexit, I contend that any duping was with regards to what would happen not becasue of Brexit but because a government reneged on its commitment to limit immigration to tens of thousands, not once but twice and then moved that to a points system as a means of control which they ignored. The ball is now clearly with the electorate and come the election it will be an interesting time and run up to it.

The stupid bit is that they let Farage persuade them it was the fault of the EU and that leaving would solve it.

Are we supposed to thank Sunak for cutting immigration for students, in favour of illegal migrants, ... I think not.

Are we supposed to thank Sunak for cutting immigration for students, in favour of illegal migrants, ... I think not. How has Sunak cut immigration in favour of illegal migrants. Who's fault is it that illegal immigrants are pouring over the channel. And whose fault is it that those who should not be here. Still here. You still labouring and beleiving the fanny that there are safe routes into the UK

That may have a degree of truth but Farage at no point to my recollection said immigration was all the fault of teh EU he said that we could not control numbers from EU countries if we were members, which was true certainly in the long term as an EU freedom.

Are you saying that a Government prepared to reduce immigration cannot be voted in? Good question. Yes, but you'd have to sign up to my theory to see why. As you know my theory is that the government relies on an increased population each year to increase GDP and tax take to pay last years debts. They have become addicted to this injection of grownups who do not need to be fed and nurtured for 18 years before they contribute. I know the argument, that they don't pay much tax, but they don't need to, they just need to make things that sell. So if they stop immigration GDP stalls, tax slows but the goodies the public want continue to grow and the population grows older. Conclusion; any government that promise to cut immigration will have to promise to raise taxes. There's the rub.

Well we have close on record legal immigration and taxes are soaring so what is the difference? In effect though you do not need immigrants you just have to have a programme of work permits, training programmes and a block on permanent immigration.
